Garden visit to Susan's

The weather on the 13th of April was fine and sunny, maximum temperature 25C. Perfect for a garden visit. Twenty one of us visited Susan's garden in Urunga, and our time was split between admiring the garden and chatting / eating / relaxing on the spacious back deck.

Some of the highlights of her garden included:
  • The addition of native trees for shade and cooling during the summer months.
  • Extensive trellising to maximise her growing space with some vertical gardening.
  • A bountiful crop of Okra, nearing the end of a productive season.
  • Some huge passionfruit (Panama).
  • A clump of Paw paws / Papayas. The plants were all male or female, no hermaphrodite / bisexual plants. Jeff discussed culling one of Susan's two male plants to leave only a single male. Males sometimes set poor quality fruit, but one male can pollinate multiple female plants. The male flowers were more tubular on longer stalks and much more numerous than the female flowers, which are larger and more rounded at the base. There was also some discussing about coercing one of the males to change gender, by giving it some rough treatment or beheading it. This discussion was accompanied with some mirth by some of the ladies.

As well as the gardening tips shared in the garden tour and in discussions on the deck, several lucky people walked away with books donated by John as part of trimming down his library. There were also several seedlings and cuttings finding new homes on the day.

Thank you to Susan for sharing her beautiful house and garden with us.

Winter solstice at David's garden in Gleniffer

SATURDAY June 22, 11.30am - 2:30pm

Remember to seek out the sign-in sheet on arrival.
Please bring a contribution to our shared lunch

Well, the solstice is nearly upon us and we invite you to visit one of our favourite winter wonderlands; David Pepper's abundant and eclectic Gleniffer garden.

We will get together for an early, leisurely  lunch, followed by rambles through the property to marvel at David's latest doings. And if we're lucky, maybe get the firepit blazing.

Always a relaxed and jovial affair, please join us to warm the shortest of days and herald the lengthening ones to come ☺

If you have them:
Please bring seeds or cuttings to share.

Coming? please click here to RSVP, to obtain the address and so we know who’s attending. Please RSVP even if you already know how to get there.

There's a new weekly farmers/produce market in Bellingen on Wednesdays 2.30-6pm at the showgrounds. They have a really interesting idea called the 'community table' where anyone with ad-hoc excess produce can sell their produce. To use the community table you need to fill out an application - they need this for planning.
