Seed packing at Gillian's

Twelve of us joined Gillian for seed packing on her deck in Fernmount.

The weather was kind to us and we made rapid progress cleaning and packing seeds and keeping a steady stream of conversation flowing.
How many seeds per packet?
The number of seeds per packet is dependent upon the seed size (more for smaller seed sizes), how many seeds we have (more if we have heaps to spare), and the number required for genetic diversity (more for obligate out-crossers than self pollinators).
How do we keep seed lines pure?
Jeff was asked how he kept his pak choi from crossing with other Brassicas.
Options: Distance; keep them far from other flowering brassicas. Only have one brassica growing at a time. Remove the flowers from all other brassicas in the garden.

For other types of plants there are different strategies. You can find out more in the Seed Savers Handbook or by chatting with us at the plant fair.
