"Most Ambitious Biography" of Orrin Hatch Hits Bookshelves Today

WASHINGTON, DC—Today marks the official release of Titan of the Senate: Orrin Hatch and the Once and Future Golden Age of Bipartisanship by William Doyle. This comprehensive biography of Senator Orrin G. Hatch chronicles the prolific life and career of America’s “most effective” Senator—from his early days as a metal lather in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to his rise as one of the most successful lawmakers of all time. The book distills dozens of interviews with Hatch and other congressional leaders, as well as more than 10,000 pages of research from the U.S. Senate Historian's files. Starting today, it is available for purchase online and in major bookstores across the country (see below promo code to receive a 25% discount).

“How do you capture the policy impact of an outsize figure like Orrin Hatch in a just a couple hundred pages? It’s no easy task, but Bill Doyle does it remarkably well,” said Hatch Foundation Executive Director Matt Sandgren. “Titan of the Senate is by far the most ambitious biography ever written about Utah’s longest-serving Senator. This book is as sweeping in its scope as it is original in its insights. Readers will leave with a deeper understanding of what made Senator Hatch so successful as a legislator, as well as hope for a political future built around his unique style of policymaking.”

Titan of the Senate is a powerful tribute to one of the most consequential legislators of modern times,” said Hatch Foundation Chair Scott Anderson. “At the time of his retirement, Senator Hatch had passed more bills into law than anyone alive—a testament to his work ethic, policy savvy, and undeniable charm as a legislator. There are countless lessons to be taken from the Senator's public service—lessons that if properly applied can help heal our politics and fix a broken nation.”

“In this moving biography, Doyle goes behind the scenes of Senator Hatch’s toughest legislative battles to unpack what made Orrin Hatch such a powerful presence on Capitol Hill. And in the process, he offers us a roadmap for restoring the ethos of bipartisanship and compromise that defined Senator Hatch’s public service,” said Hatch Foundation Board Member John Castle. “It’s a must-read for anyone interested in restoring the bonds of national commitment that have tied Americans together since our nation’s founding.”

Book Description:

If greatness is measured by achievement, Orrin Hatch was the greatest U.S. Senator of modern times—discover the life and career of the Senator through archival material, original research, and exclusive interviews.

This is the dramatic story of a conservative champion who shaped modern America—by leading a Golden Age of Bipartisanship and passing more legislation than any other Senator in the post-Vietnam era. Senator Orrin Hatch co-wrote the most sweeping civil rights bill since the 1960s, launched a health insurance program for 25,000,000 uninsured children, co-created the generic drug industry, and championed the greatest HIV/AIDS legislation in American history, while sponsoring or co-sponsoring over 750 pieces of legislation. Based on interviews with Hatch and many of his Senate colleagues plus over 10,000 pages of research from the U.S. Senate Historian's files, this is also the story of a leader who, before his passing, envisioned a New Golden Age of Bipartisanship for the future of American politics.
