Aloha mai kākou,
I hope all of our friends and ʻohana are staying safe during these difficult times, as we enduāre this historic pandemic – COVID 19.
THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS CAUCUS (HAC) OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS ASKING OUR GENERAL MEMBERSHIP TO SUPPORT OUR CALL TO ACTION.
Over 30 Native Hawaiian Democrats are currently running for public office. In line with our mission, we are supporting these candidates through various ways, including “Informercials”, virtual friend to friend email cards that will carry their message to voters in their Districts, and other voters who wish to support these candidates.
Additionally, we will help in other ways, such as endorsement, if the candidate is a Democrat and a member of the HAC whose views align with the mission of the Caucus, and their experience demonstrates their support for Native Hawaiians. Because timing is of the essence and with only 22 days before the general election, I humbly ask our general membership to support the decision made by the HAC Executive Committee to endorse our Native Hawaiian HAC member candidates.
Please allow our Native Hawaiian candidates to be our voice. Your input is also invited by writing to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The first person that we have endorsed is Esther Kia’aina who is running for City Councilwoman, Council District 3.
Esther is a long-standing member of the HAC and has excellent public service experience, having served as Deputy to the U.S. Dept of the Interior and as Deputy Director of the Hawai‘i Dept of Land and Natural Resources. Esther shares her voice with Council District 3, “As a Native Hawaiian, I know we must strike the right balance in building a prosperous and vibrant community that leaves no one behind, but also recognizes that the things that make this place special—its culture, history, and the environment—must be protected at all cost.”
We hope that you will agree with the actions that we are taking to uplift Native Hawaiian candidates by supporting their campaigns.
In the new “normal” we must strive to boldly and clearly assure our Hawaiian community that we are diligent and perpetual in advancing Hawaiian leaders whose voices must be heard.
I humbly ask for your support for all our current HAC members/candidates, who are facing tough races throughout Hawaii nei.
Please reach out and help these candidates through various campaign activities – virtual Friend to Friend email distribution, phone banking, sign-waving, and much needed monetary donations to sustain their campaigns.
The Executive Committee of the HAC, because of COVID 19, has answered the call to help our members and their public service for all people of Hawaii. I pray you will bless us all with your support.
I wish to share the words that were written by one of our most beloved Hawaiian Leaders, the late United States Senator Dan Akaka, ”I ola ‘oe, I ola mākou nei! “My life is dependent on yours, and your life is dependent on mine!”
A hui hou,
Juanita Mahienaena Brown Kawamoto
