The Language Teacher 2020
Using New Media: Challenges and Responses
The 2017 ICC conference will be held at the ECML headquarters in Graz, Austria from April 21- April 23, starting at 1830 on Friday evening with a reception and closing Sunday at 1300.
The cost for ICC members is €130, and includes the reception, lunch on Saturday and refreshments during the conference.
The non-member fee is €180, which also gives the delegate free membership of the ICC for the calendar year of the conference (Jan-Dec 2017).
Students pay a reduced fee of €70.
A few rooms are available at the convent 'Exerzitienhaus' at a cost of €40 per night, but the number of rooms is limited and will be booked up quickly. Details here:

Graz has many hotels at all price points, but they can get filled quite early, so we suggest booking your room as soon as possible.
There is a wide range of well-known speakers including keynotes from Ursula Stickler, Robert O'Dowd, and ICC Board members Rob Williams and Michael Carrier.

Programme & Registration
You can find a draft programme for the AGM and conference, and a registration form on the ICC website:
The ICC Journal
Check your inboxes early February for ISSUE 1 of ICC’s own academic journal TLC.  It’s a jewel of a publication containing a Keynote by Professor David Crystal and articles on Automatic Speech Recognition, Negotiation and Business Communication and Modern Trends in Discourse among other riches.
132 pages of articles, reviews, news from EUROLTA, ICC and PFUR and a homage to our late great ICC President Professor Jack Lonergan who sadly died at the dawn of the new year.
We are already accepting articles for peer-review for ISSUE 2 April/May and if you are a researcher or have research students this is a great chance to get on the publishing ladder fast and promote your academic career.
Any thoughts or proposals, write to me at -  I look forward to hearing from you.
News from Members
ICC partner TELLConsult’s key activities these past months were mostly related to the current EU grant programme  ErasmusPlus and included:

- Contributing to the dissemination and exploitation of the EU project 'Interactive Teaching in Languages with Technologies' iTILT (2014 -2017) on the use of mobile and interactive classroom technologies.
- In addition to promoting the project’s web presence we ran a workshop on the use of student response systems and formative assessment at the project’s second multiplier event at Antwerp university

- Attending the kick-off meetings of 2 new EU projects on the use of tablets to support differentiation & inclusion (TABLIO) and the innovation of HE courses (REDESIGN) respectively.
- The definition of TELLConsult’s ErasmusPlus courses on themes including Interactive classroom technologies, video, response tools, mobile devices and more. For an overview consult the course description pages:
- Also this year we accepted invitations to join a number of new EU project KA2 initiatives on the topics: tablet-based innovation in teacher education, gamification, implementation of TBLT and ICT-based innovation of language teaching in Adult Education. For his latter project idea we suggested to also include the ICC association.
Jack Lonergan
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Professor Jack Lonergan, former Chair of ICC and a dedicated language educator. Jack spent his career helping learners and teachers, working for many years in Germany for the Centre for British Teachers and later at the University of Westminster in London. Jack was a dynamic presence in language education, and a friend and inspiration to many in the profession - he will be greatly missed. There is a full appreciation of Jack's life in the first issue of Training Language and Culture Journal.
New ICC website
We are embarking on a re-design of the ICC website, to bring it up-to-date visually and to extend the range of information and support for members.

What kind of information and services would you like to access on the ICC website? Please get in touch and share your ideas for the new website design: send your ideas to

EUROLTA (European Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults) centres will now all become ICC members as part of the Accreditation process.
The ICC Board has decided to encourage more member involvement by making membership of the ICC association automatic for any institution that is accredited as a EUROLTA centre, and providing the first year's membership free as part of the accreditation process.

Digital language learning: new book by ICC author
