Susan Zucker, director of VMCC Selected as Participant in Leadership Westchester

Our very own Susan Zucker, director of  Virginia Marx Children’s Center, has been selected as the Child Care Council of Westchester’s 2016 recipient of the Cathryn A. Riley Leadership Fund Scholarship, which will fund her participation in Leadership Westchester (LW). LW is a program of Volunteer New York!, featuring a rigorous nine-month curriculum designed to sharpen leadership skills and give participants an in-depth understanding of how various  non-profits work.

“As educators, we place immense value on continuing personal and professional development. We’re so pleased that Susan has earned this opportunity,” says  Westchester Community College President Dr. Belinda S. Miles.

“I’m honored to represent the Virginia Marx Children’s Center, the Child Care Council of Westchester, and Westchester’s early childhood education community as part of the Leadership Westchester class,” says Susan. “I look forward to the opportunity to enhance my leadership skills for the benefit of VMCC children and families, and to become part of the wonderful and impressive community of LW alumni.”

The Leadership Westchester program kicked off on October 18, 2016 with an opening retreat, and will continue with full and half day sessions through June, 2017.  After graduation, Susan will share the highlights of her experience with the Council’s Scholarship committee and the early education community.

Spotlight:  Dance! Our New Enrichment Program
This semester the older toddler and the preschool children have enjoyed the addition of a new enrichment program, dance.  Weekly they have dance class with Michelle.  The class starts with stretching.  Michelle then explains that the children will be learning a new dance like “The Scarecrow Dance.”  She then provides easy steps to follow like, “Hands up, hands down,  bounce, bounce, bounce.”  Michelle then plays upbeat  music.  The children seem to especially love music that involves drumming.  “I like the music at dance class.” Says Alexander S.
Recently Michelle introduced the concept of jumps and leaps to the children as part of dance.  This helps with coordination, listening skills, core strength, as well as balance, and large motor skills.  The children had to jump, forwards and backwards, leap, and even hop.  They had to wait for their turn and then jump from a circle of a particular color to the square of the corresponding color. This excercise reinforces, color recognition, turn taking, and following directions.  Each class ends with some “cool down” stretches and a conversation about what the children liked best about the class that day.  “I like jumping over the stars because I like jumping,” says Thomas C.  The children are looking forward to continuing dance class in the spring semester.
Parent Coffee, Wednesday, January 25, 11:30-12:30

We look forward to having Dr. Jeanette Sawyer-Cohen, developmental psychologist, lead our Parent Coffee on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Dr. Jeanette will talk to parents about how to handle transitions that occur in a child's daily life in a developmentally appropriate way to help both parent and child.  We are very happy to be welcoming Dr. Jeanette back to VMCC.
