How do we support our Summerfair mission?
 

The Emerging Artists Exhibition is a group of students nominated by their professors as the best in their class. We had 7 schools and 19 students this year, submitting 57 pieces. Thanks to Pat Olding, Terri Kern and Lori Lesak, we got everything hung and placed in the 3 days leading up to the event. 

We had 176 people attend the Opening Reception and an additional 75 came through to view these beautiful creations during the exhibition. 

These pictures show the huge job of getting everything ready - professors as well as family and friends enjoying the art - then tension as Terri Kern speaks and announces the winning pieces. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a success. In attendance were Jill Conway, Donna Binzer, Kelly R, Sandy Case, Angie Schmidt, Linda Tache, Lori Lesak, Debbie Newsome and Jayne Utter. (if I missed naming you, I didn't mean it)

First place went to Hanna Martin's, By A Thread. Second place piece was Dollface by Jazmina Robinhawk, third place awarded to Chole Wenger's Anticipation. The Jerry Bollen Award was won by Sam Edwards for Pallot Form. Congratulations to all 19 students for being tops in the junior and senior classes.
 

 

How do we support our Summerfair mission?
 

Over the past 4 years we have awarded the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program that is of late, hosted by the Art Academy of Cincinnati. This was one of our Big Gives totaling $50,000. Summerfair started supporting these awards in 1994 with total support over $105,000.

It was an honor for Jill Conway and I to attend the Award Reception at the AAC and view all the winning pieces. Over the years, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation's largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. Winners from our region will now go to New York city for the final awards. Congratulations to all the students and a big shout out to the Art Academy for taking on this huge task! 
 

 

How do we support our Summerfair mission?
 

The tri-annual Summerfair Select finally had it's Opening Reception. It was cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and 2021 but rescheduled in January of 2022. The show opened January 28th and our reception was to be February 3rd. Mother Nature thought it would be fun for us to postpone it again until February 24th. What a turn out we had for a cold, rainy week night! 200 people attended this reception. What an exceptional show! You can see for yourself at the Weston Gallery until April 3rd.

The 12 artists in the exhibition were winners of the Summerfair - Aid to Individual Artists awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018. We ask them to come back so we can see how our funds have helped them grow their talents. As is evident after viewing all the piece, our artists have become professionals.

A huge thanks goes out to Dennis Herrington and his staff who worked with the artists to get all the artwork in, placed, lit and information placed by each artists works. Summerfair members who attended were Kristen and Jeff Nicholas, Angie Schmidts, Lori Lesak, Jill Conway, Donna Binzer, Kelly Reilman, Sandy Case and Jayne Utter. (if I missed naming you, I didn't mean it)

I had the privilege to host the luncheon and judging for the Small Arts Awards this month. We had a lot of good entries and gave out a bit of money. Come to the meeting and meet our winners.

For all our new Green Shirt members - now is the time to order your lovely green shirts for the fair. We have a limited supply that will be at the meeting for $15. All new orders will be $20 each. You can order all polyester or a cotton/poly blend. Samples of these will be at the meeting.

And for those of you who have been members and need a small ;-) or maybe larger shirt or just a fresh one, you too can place an order. See you at the meeting on MONDAY March 21st.

The Small Arts Awards judging happened on March 5, with a jury of 9 Summerfair members. There were 11 submissions and we were able to grant awards to 7 of the applicants. The 7 organizations have been invited to the March membership meeting on Monday, March 21, to share a little about their organization and how they will use the award money.

Please join us to meet a representative from each group and to hear about what amazing arts organizations we have in the Cincinnati area.

Well it looks like Green Shirt sign up time is here. We will have  printed “job descriptions” available at the meeting for new green shirts and anyone who may want to try something different but just isn’t sure what a certain job is.

I’m once again taking off my trustee hat and putting on my Green Shirt Shift Coordinator hat for this newsletter. 

If you have suggestions for anything related to the schedule, now is the time to make them. The board and division heads need time to discuss the suggestions, and it’s easier for me to implement changes early in the process. Welcome to March! This is when everything heats up for the big event. Our posters are printed and awaiting the debut event on April 7th. Our ale is brewing, flowers are about ready to bloom for the event and the 2022 poster stickers are ready to be handed out. Fair tickets will be available via Eventbrite starting April 7th through June 5th.  Advertising and promoting will be in full swing. Billboards are ready to go, t-shirts are being ordered and artists are paying for their booth spaces. Our entertainers are set, foodies are ready to go and the grounds are drying out for what we hope will be the only flood of this spring season.

It's so great to have all these days and weeks to prepare for our big event after our 2020 cancellation and the 2021 last minute sprint to opening day. Can't wait to see all your names in the Green Shirt volunteer sign up slots! I can feel it in my fingers as I type this, it's going to be a fantastic Summerfair 2022!!

 2 months, 3 weeks and 3 days is the countdown to Summerfair 2022.
