Varanasi Children's Arts Festival, 2019

Our annual celebration of arts, the Varanasi Children’s Arts Festival, was held on both our campuses on 20th and 22nd December 2019. This event was open to all children and families of Varanasi and its surroundings.

Audiences were treated to beautiful performances by the children of our school. 'Circus' by our Preschool students amused the parents, and folk dances of Maharashtra, Punjab, Bengal, Goa and Garhwal by Primary Section students impressed them. Plays by Classes 6 and 9, adapted from fairytales and Jataka Tales, engaged the audience and made them reflect on their own beliefs. Class 10 did a fusion of Contemporary Dance and Kathak. There were also breathtaking demonstrations of Karate and Aikido. The two choirs presented a good mix of Indian and International songs, that were melodious and won the hearts of the audience members.

Alongside the performances, we also hosted workshops on storytelling, fine arts, dance, music, and civic consciousness workshops on elections and traffic signals. We had a Museum of Extraordinary Artifacts, a Bookstall, a Corner for Young Children, a Photo Booth, and a Science Exhibition by senior students with working engines, robots, and solar lights.

A new decade for NIRMAN!

As we move into a new decade, we must remember the special role that our organisation NIRMAN and our school VIDYASHRAM—THE SOUTHPOINT play. We continue to be the only school set up with the dedicated mission of excellence in education plus integration of all classes and communities. In 1990, well before the RTE Act was imagined, we laboured on how to design classrooms and teaching that had only the child at the centre. What followed from this was the training of teachers to understand difference in children and to focus on progressive and innovative methods as the solution to difference.

In 2019, we worked to the hilt. We expanded and beautified our preschool and its playground area. We researched and developed our arts curriculum. Our children learnt to excel academically as well as took pleasure in becoming self-guided learners and leaders. With farming, classical music, Aikido, community service, and theatre on their plates, they were full of energy.

In 2020, our main goal is to grow as a Playgroup to Class X school in the idyllic campus of Betawar, and as a Playgroup to Class IV school in the city campus of Nagwa. The research, curriculum development, teaching, and arts work we do must come to be known in larger circles. This is important so that there can be a difference in the learning levels of a larger number of children. Even more importantly, our school stands forth as a model in India of an integrated school with world-class standards of education—a proof that excellence does not have to be based on discrimination. I am very proud of the wonderful team I work with. Every teacher, manager, assistant, and staff member works tirelessly to live up to the dream that is NIRMAN.  Their energy and morale is gratifying, because without a team, no dream can have success.

Please join us in your own way. We have spaces and work for all friends. Please donate something on this auspicious dawn of a new year to go towards anything you choose, from a set of books for a class library to a new bus for the school.

We wish you health and peace in the New Year!

Our Riverside Campus in 2020!
In 2020, we are planning to continue and intensify our focus on our riverside campus, situated in the two villages of Betawar and Chhitauni. For those who have not visited, we have:
- a beautiful school building with an attached playground and kitchen garden
- other plots with vegetable farming, carpentry, and other community projects
- space for serious sports
- a 4 acre-plus section set apart for reforestation - we are looking into trying the Miyawaki technique for rejuvenation of original forests.

All of this is on the banks of the river Ganga, with amazing views on all sides- of the river and fields. A new development is the installation of a pontoon bridge across the river right next to our school building, so there is much more excitement and activity, and we need to start taking an even more active role in controlling and designing ways to deal with garbage, garbage burning, parking, and other such things.

We are also working on trying to control erosion in a natural canal that borders and divides our land, and doing so both on our own and through petitioning the government.

Ideas and collaborations are welcome in 2020 - in farming, community projects, forestry, erosion and soil management, garbage and other pollution control, irrigation and water harvesting, and sustainable construction.

Visit us! We are very accessible via a highway and good roads.

"The fact that Southpoint welcomes and supports students from all social, economic and national backgrounds makes it a school with a truly “global” ethos, in the sense of breaking down barriers and welcoming diversity. From the beginning I felt that Andrés will have the opportunity to interact with local children from all walks of life, as well as with some other international children, both of which are greatly needed to expand his world beyond the rather sheltered BHU environment where we live and work..."
