The Augustine Literacy Project® of the Upstate is born!

ALP of the Upstate began January 2016 as a newly incorporated non-profit organization independent from Redeemer Presbyterian Church of Travelers Rest.  The 501(c)(3) status will put the program in a more advantageous position to apply for grants and other donations necessary for growth.

Without the support of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, nine years ago, the Upstate chapter of ALP would not exist.  We are grateful for their willingness to start ALP in the Upstate of South Carolina and appreciate their continued support by providing office and library space.
We are excited to offer two training sessions in a revised format for 2016:
July 21-28 and September 22-29.
These training sessions will be six days (Thursday, Friday and Monday-Thursday) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In those six days we will cover all of the classroom requirements of tutor training.  The classroom portion of the training is followed by a six lesson practicum
(2 lessons per week for 3 weeks)
working with your Augustine student alongside an experienced mentor tutor.  You will then continue tutoring that child for the remainder of the school year.  If you participate in the summer training session, there will be a few weeks between the classroom and practicum sections of the training.  The Project provides $300 worth of materials to facilitate your lessons, and you are responsible for that cost.  All other training costs are covered by the Augustine Project.
It's a Great Day in South Carolina!

H. 5024, a joint resolution "TO REQUIRE THAT BEFORE THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR, THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SHALL PROVIDE ALL READING/LITERACY COACHES AND LITERACY TEACHERS WITH TRAINING ON DYSLEXIA, INCLUDING EVIDENCE-BASED DYSLEXIA SCREENING, INSTRUCTION METHODS AND INTERVENTIONS, AND TO IMPOSE RELATED REPORTING REQUIREMENTS ON THE DEPARTMENT," passed the House Education and Public Works sub-committee (8-0), and full House Education and Public Works committee 15-0. The next journey for the joint resolution is the House floor for vote in a few weeks (majority vote is needed).  After the anticipated majority vote, it moves onto a Senate sub-committee, the full Senate committee, then a Senate vote!  This is a truly an amazing day for dyslexics.
The ball is definitely rolling!

Now that we are incorporated as a 501(3)(c), we can reach out into the community and partner with interested businesses and apply for grants with charitable foundations to help us fund advertising, outreach and tutor training to grow the program and to keep up with the need.  We have two new business partners who have made donations in support of our efforts.

Our first business partner is Fresh Market on Woodruff Road.  Another reason for us all to love the Fresh Market!  Be sure to say thank you to the management team when shopping for those wonderful weekly specials.

Our second business partner is QuikTrip.  QT's are springing up all over the Upstate and we are grateful for their contribution.  QT believes the most effective way  to invest their contribution dollars is to help those at risk reach their functional capacity as successful, independent citizens.  We agree!

If you would like to make a donation, please send a check written to Augustine Literacy Project of the Upstate, 2435 East North Street, Suite 1108-266, Greenville, SC 29615

The Augustine Family sends our fondest wishes to Board Member and long standing supporter,
Terri Koontz.
We miss your sense of humor and pray for comfort and healing.
Did you Hear?

We serve children in the Upstate area who are reading, writing and spelling below grade level.  These children qualify for free or reduced price lunch and are below grade level performance in reading,
writing or spelling.

Pre- and Post-Testing shows that the Augustine Project consistently produces positive results.  Since 2009, students who have completed 30 lessons have scored an average gain of more than one grade level in both spelling and word attack skills, and significant gains were made in reading fluency and comprehension.

In each of the last three school years, volunteer tutors provided more than 800 free lessons to deserving students.
Augustine tutors currently serve in the following schools.

Greenville County
Alexander Elementary School
Blythe Academy
Brook Glenn Elementary School
Robert E. Cashion Elementary School
Cherrydale Elementary School
GREEN Academy Charter School
Monarch Elementary School
Sara Collins Elementary School
St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School

We always need volunteers! If you or someone you know would like to be part of the change in not only a child's academics, but also his life, please contact us through our web site or

Teacher Recertification
Teachers who are certified Augustine tutors currently helping a qualified student before or after school in a 1:1 setting and those who complete Augustine Literacy Tutor Training may receive recertification credits.  Each teacher must apply with their individual school district.  We suggest that teachers receive administrative approval prior to completing the training. We will provide documentation noting hours earned. Augustine Tutor Talk
Meet and Greet!
Augustine Tutor Talk meetings are informal, supportive, and informational gatherings held in the morning, afternoon, and evening on a monthly rotational basis. On March 14, a total of 15 tutors and guests were treated to a demo lesson at a fun gathering where tutors reconnect and guests consider becoming a tutor or at least an ambassador for the program.  The evening was complete with fabulous refreshments, door prizes and fellowship for all.  Please check our website for the latest schedule!
