Principal's Message

Dear Sea Lion Families,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend McGaugh’s Back to School night on Thursday. What an amazing turnout. The campus was buzzing with parents reaching out to connect with new community members as well old ones. The classrooms were filled with pictures, student work, and the McGaugh teachers were shining. Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s educational career.

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL:
The McGaugh School Site Council (SSC) has THREE parent vacancies which we are looking to fill.

The SSC collaborates to develop and implement McGaugh’s Academic Plan. This plan highlights the specific goals and objectives in the following areas: school safety, parent involvement, instructional practice, student equity, and academic achievement.
The SSC consists of six parent members and six school staff members. In general, three to four meetings are held during the school year at 2:45pm on Wednesdays. Our first meeting is October 19, 2022.

Parents who are elected to the SSC serve a two-year term. This year's incoming representatives will serve on the SSC for the 2022-2023 and 2023-24 school years. An electronic ballot will be sent out to all McGaugh families on Monday, September 12th to elect our newest members.

If you are a McGaugh parent interested in having an active voice in the planning of school goals and objectives, please complete the Google form below by Thursday, September 8th at 9:00am.

Thank you for your interest and consideration.

SAFETY UPDATE:
Thank you for your patience as we address the before school playground time. We are currently working as a staff to reopen the playground, before school, in a way that students start their day calm, happy, with smaller numbers on the play structures, and safe for all Sea Lions. During this interim, the before school playground will stay closed TEMPORARILY through next week and will open back up on Monday, September 12th. Thank you again and please know your child’s safety and well-being is our top priority which leads to the whole child’s success; academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

PTA MEETING RECAP

After enjoying free coffee and doughnuts, more than 40 people attended the first PTA meeting of the year on Sept. 1 inside the McGaugh Auditorium.

In case you missed it, here's a recap of what happened.
  • SHADE STRUCTURES: Principal Wendy Wood shared that, with PTA support, Assistant Principal Rick Larson is leading an effort to get short-term shade structures built over the lunch tables that are currently not covered. The shade structures should be installed in the coming weeks.
  • SCHOOL SAFETY: Seal Beach Police Dept. Lt. Julia Clasby shared some important information about the department's commitment to keeping our campus safe. Did you know there are more than 30 cameras on campus that SBPD has access to 24/7 to see live what's happening at McGaugh?
  • PTA PROGRAMS AND EVENTS: PTA President Jennifer Katz went over PTA's biggest Programs and Events   including the upcoming Carnival & Silent Auction, happening Oct. 22, a Movie Night with a bounce house, which will also be a 5th Grade Activities Fundraiser, and P.E.A.C.E. Week happening Sept. 19-23 featuring another visit from former Paralympian Brent Poppen. Jennifer also shared that last year PTA gifted the school 40 new violins for a first-in-the-district program being led by our music teacher Ms. Basich. Also coming soon, get ready for our new Gaga Ball Pit being installed shortly!
  • We have so many ways you can support PTA this year! Being part of PTA doesn't commit you to anything, but it goes a long way to support our school. Join HERE.
  • If you would like to be involved in any of our upcoming events, or have suggestions please email Jenniferevekatz@gmail.com

Project SEEK

How many drops of water fit on a penny? I bet your first grader knows. Ask them. You can also ask you student about mixing colors, who the artist focus for the year is. These are all things students have exploring already in our STEM and art labs. Mrs. Samari and Miss Anya bring the magic from day one.

And it’s because of generous donations and support from families like you to contribute to McGaugh’s non-profit, Project SEEK!  Project SEEK fully funds the art and STEM lab, as well as the media center.

One of the easiest ways to support Project SEEK is by becoming a Sea Lion Sponsor and donating to our Fall Donation Drive https://one.bidpal.net/sealionsponsor.  Grandparents and family members are always welcome to donate and get involved, as well.

We hope you can join us in our efforts to keep these amazing programs running. We are so grateful for your continued support of art and technology at McGaugh!

Sincerely,
Claudia Vecchio Wille

Project SEEK President 2022-2023
