Principal's Message

Dear Sea Lion Families,
As fall parent teacher conferences come to a close this week, I want to say thank you. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with your Sea Lion’s teacher/s to celebrate their successes and discuss goals for the year. We are grateful for your partnership in your child’s educational journey.
Speaking of gratitude, our November Wellness initiative begins next week. The wellness theme this month is focused on “GRATITUDE.” Gratitude means feeling thankful and appreciative for what we already have. By recognizing what we are grateful for, we can multiply our happiness and well-being. If you focus on the positive things in your life, you end up feeling more satisfied with your life (research studies have proved this to us). Gratitude isn’t just being thankful for the big things in your life, though. It’s also about learning to notice all the little things that happen that you can be happy about too! Our wellness counselor will further expand on this theme within the monthly classroom lesson. There will also be “Gratitude Grams” available in the Wellness Space and at lunch for kids to have an opportunity to reflect and show appreciation and gratitude for others!
Wellness at Home:
Here are two short read alouds you can watch with your child(ren) to further foster the idea of “Gratitude.” We encourage you to watch together and have an open discussion about what these stories mean and how they connect with your Sea Lion.

UTK/Kinder-2nd Grade Read Aloud: “My Gratitude Jar”

3rd-5th Grade Read Aloud: “Grow Grateful”
Calling all Veterans! If you or a family member are a current or retired member of our military, you are cordially invited to attend a special Veteran's Day Flag Ceremony, honoring all veterans, on Thursday, November 10th at 8:05am.  Please fill out this short Google Form with the name and branch of service of the Veteran attending our ceremony, so we may properly honor this special Veteran.
Please join the McGaugh School community as we pay tribute to our heroes in celebration of Veterans Day at our Flag Deck ceremony. And please be on the look-out for a certificate coming home for you to fill out with your child. We are asking you to take the time to honor someone either in your family or in your life who has served or is serving our country. We will proudly display these certificates at our assembly.
At McGaugh, we know that the price of our freedom is paid for by the courage of our military. We hope to celebrate you Thursday, November 10th at 8:05am.

This year, Los Alamitos Unified is partnering with Revolution Prep to provide free online tutoring through their Revolution Now service for 4th and 5th grade students. “Revolution Now” provides professional tutoring support seven days a week through chat or video sessions to help students with homework, prepare for assessments, and receive essay feedback.

For your student to access free tutoring via Revolution Prep, a parent/guardian must attend a 30-minute information session. The purpose of the information session is to explain how the service works and how to log in and join a tutoring session. The District pays per student license for the tutoring service, and we want to ensure that every license bought is purposeful and that all barriers to logging into the service are removed.

All “Revolution Now” tutors are full-time professional tutors with experience engaging and supporting students virtually. The service guarantees that all tutors…

  • Have content expertise in their tutoring subject(s).
  • Annually complete over 150 hours of training and development on engagement and student support techniques.
  • Go through a background check and vetting to ensure safe experiences for students.
For those students and families interested in this opportunity, the sign-up process begins with attending an upcoming Revolution Prep information session.
  • Seven online session options are available to choose from over the next two weeks.
  • During the meeting, we will share how the service works, answer questions, and provide access to the sign-up form.
  • The sign-up form will ask for your student’s email address, so please have the information accessible. If you need to look up your student’s email, you can follow the pdf or video guides for support.

A Peek Inside The Art Lab

The Art Lab:
Students studied Belgium artist Rene Magritte…students created birds with a stencil and using tools, other than paintbrushes, they showed the contrast between daytime, inside the bird, and night, outside the bird. Other classes explored making collage landscapes. This exploration of different mediums, art history, artist study and expressing ideas through art is what our McGaugh Sea Lions experience weekly in our art lab…the only elementary school art lab in the district!
