Principal's Message

Dear McGaugh Sea Lions,

There are many things to be thankful for at McGaugh and Los Alamitos Unified School District, and LEAF (Los Alamitos Education Foundation) is just one of them.
Two weeks ago, at the State of the District breakfast event, LAEF presented a donation check to Los Alamitos High School for $245,000.  This record donation will fund the construction, furnishings, and décor for the new LAHS Well Space, which is currently under construction (completion is planned in December).  Like the established spaces at Oak and McAuliffe Middle Schools, the Well Space will be a calm, comfortable and safe place for students to reset and seek counseling support.  LAEF would like to thank the 2022 Fundraising February for Los Al Kids supporters, who made this donation possible.  The LAEF Board of Directors approved an additional $70,000, beyond the $175,000 net from Fundraising February, to fully fund the project due to inflation and increased construction costs. A portion of this donation will go to McGaugh’s own wellness space.

Another reason for McGaugh to be thankful is our very own PTA. In addition to the many donations and programs they provide our school, they just recently provided additional covers, to the lunch bench area, to keep the sun exposure to a minimum while our Sea Lions eat lunch. Thank you McGaugh PTA!

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Please join us for a community wide WALK/ BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12th.  Meet us or drop off your child at Pavilions or Heron point by 7:15am.  Together with staff and our Seal Beach Police Department, we will walk/bike to school at 7:25am. Our goal is to increase connectivity between staff, community members, parents, and students.  We hope to reduce traffic congestion, teach pedestrian safety, and increase physical activity!

MISSED INSTRUCTIONAL TIME and INDEPENDENT STUDY

Once in a great while, an opportunity to travel and experience something so incredible is right in front of us! These should be exceptions and, generally, are opportunities we should not miss! If this is the case, we would encourage you to enter into an Independent Study Contract (a minimum of 3 school days in length.) Your child is not marked absent and the school collects the Average Daily Attendance rate for those days. We need two-week’s notice for this. However, when possible, we HIGHLY encourage vacations and family trips to be taken during non-instructional time. There are 31 days within the school year (not including weekends) that school is not in session. We encourage you to take your trips then so that instructional time is not interrupted. The school calendar can be found on our website. In our first eight weeks of school, we have issued 40 Independent Study Contracts totaling over 185 missed instructional days. Please be mindful of this as you plan for the rest of the year

Los Alamitos Unified Employment Opportunities

Los Alamitos Unified School District is in need of Student Supervision Assistants. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday during lunch time and varies by school site and need, depending on lunch schedule and supervisor requirements. Our annual SILENT AUCTION needs your help! Please take a minute to “meet” the amazing Project SEEK funded teachers who make it all possible and learn more about our Art and Technology programs at McGaugh!

Those smiling faces need your help!  Project SEEK is McGaugh's non-profit organization that raises money to fund our art lab, innovation/STEM lab and media center.  We fund three teachers' salaries and all the supplies for these labs to enrich the education of every McGaugh student. Research shows that art, innovation and media education encourage problem solving, creativity, and a growth mindset in all subject areas.
