They're taking action and inspiring us

"In under a month, a motivated group of juniors from Centennial High School in Compton, California showed me just how quickly students can effect change in their communities.

"I first met these students and their incredible teacher at a workshop The Civics Center led at USC in early March. The students were shocked, as I had been, to learn about the low voter registration and turnout rates among California voters. Yet, more importantly, they were inspired by the opportunity to make a difference."

Advocacy updates

State laws should encourage high school voter registration. Tennessee recently enacted a state law to do the opposite by throwing up barriers to citizen-led voter registration drives. Read how this law affects young people in Vicki Shapiro’s  latest blog post, “Br[e]aking Democracy.”

Training leaders to make an impact

Throughout this semester, we’ve refined our training program to cover everything a teacher or student needs to know to plan a high school voter registration drive. In one hour, we explain the current state of youth voter participation, cover 10 steps to plan a drive, and review how to fill out the California voter registration form.

Offered online and in-person, this training prepares high school communities to make an immediate improvement in voter registration rates locally. We’ve trained students from all over: from Riverside to Salt Lake City. We are also expanding our reach by teaming up with organizations such a WAVE in Orange County and a group at Cal State University San Marcos that mentors high school students whose lives have been impacted by the criminal justice system.

We asked some of our attendees why they participated. Here’s what they said:

  • "I’m devising strategies to get more of my peers interested in local government and politics, and hope this program can show me how to connect the ideas of civics and voter registration to high school students in an effective way." - student in Utah

  • "I am just very motivated to participate in politics & civic action. I also think it's important to encourage everyone to be motivated as well!" - student in Florida

  • "I have been following along and leading my 12th grade Gov/Econ classroom through High School Voter Education Weeks in California for some time, but I haven't officially registered my class to record our participation publicly. I want to make these projects more official and more authentic!" - teacher in California
With summer approaching, the interns are coming, and they will rock the world. We will have a group of amazing college interns this summer. They’ll be helping us expand our outreach and training to other states and advocacy groups.
Training for yourself.
Training for your friends...?

On Monday, May 13th at 4 pm PT, we’ll be hosting our next online workshop directed at California! Please join us as we train high school teachers and students on leading voter registration drives. The training will last one hour and will contain a section discussing how to fill out the California voter registration form. Please reply YES to this email with your name, city, and state to RSVP.

Your donations will help register thousands of students

As our spring semester pilot wraps up, we’re heading into a summer of reflection, planning, and action.

Next school year, we will be greatly expanding our reach. The 2019-2020 school year will be a critical time for registering high school students who will be able to vote for the first time in the 2020 election.

We need your help today to support our plans to register thousands of young people in the coming year.
