Ever see tattoos of what some people call the “symbol for VHL”? That blue interlocking pattern with four dots is actually the logo of VHL Alliance.. Recently, the original was slightly modernized: “… two shades of blue emphasize the word VHL. In addition, the four dots in the symbol are now in the lighter blue shade, helping to emphasize the multiple stakeholders which include: [1] patients/caregivers/friends, [2] healthcare professionals, [3] researchers, and [4] the general public.” *

For example, in the tattoo shown in the photo, this person assigned the same logo’s interlocking pattern as “helping hands” and the four dots as 4 family members. - VHL Canada “Patient-Family Quotes" website link.

It also looks like VHLA has also shared their logo with some other VHL patient groups in the world: “It is estimated that, through associated International alliances many of which were spurred by the VHL Alliance, the organization is directly or indirectly connected to approximately 90% of patients and families with a known diagnosis of VHL, world-wide.”

The logo may symbolize hope and awareness for patients and family. It may also symbolize VHLA’s mission of being “dedicated to research, education, and support to improve awareness, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for those affected by VHL.” And it may symbolize their vision statement: “Curing cancer through VHL”.

VHL Canada is also spreading awareness, on a relatively smaller scale, by directly dealing with VHL patients and their family in Canada who may want to also share emotional support and information as it relates to living with VHL in a Canadian healthcare system and society. (Note: VHLA has volunteer "ambassadors" in each state and region and professional staff to interact directly with Americans with VHL.)
