Hope interacts a lot with healthy living

I mean that to be realistically hopeful (or optimistic), I need to prioritize my physical activity, diet, and emotional health (health living). What do you think?
… isn’t delusional. It isn’t denial. It doesn't ignore the real challenges, details of the diagnosis, or dwindling money in the checking account.  It is not woo-woo thinking.

has been characterized in the psychological literature in various ways, including as a character strength; an emotion; a component of motivation that is critical to goal attainment; a mechanism that facilitates coping with loss, illness, and other significant stresses; or an integrated combination of these features. See also optimism. —hopeful adj.

Whether a patient, a caregiver, or a family member, there are many factors that affect one’s health. Some of these cannot control such as genetic makeup or age, while some lifestyle changes can be control. There are three factors that can be controlled and can impact one’s health status are:

  • How much one moves (physical activity); What one eats (diet); and How one cares for their emotional health (coping and family and friends)

I also see myself as a leader and my own healthcare advocate:
  • Communicate about needs and feelings.
  • Ask questions and keep asking them until the information is clear.
  • Ask for help when needed
  • Become an expert. Learning about VHL is the best way to be an advocate.
  • Try to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Have backup
  • Keep a medical diary
  • It is all about the patient. ... Let them know. One can help redirect their doctors to see the big picture of their life and what [we] need

Knowledge really is power. I’ve been reading and staring at the VHL patient handbook for like 20 years!
