We have reached 11,500 people so far in 2019

The year 2019 has started on a high note, with lots of activities and achievements. There has been increased demand in our water filters from households and schools. There has also been an increase in demand for our capacity building services from government, NGOs and entrepreneurs. Altogether, we have reached 11,500 people directly between January and March, 2019. We are on course to achieving our 2019 target of reaching 47,500 people directly with our products and trainings.

FEATURE STORY

WASHiriki
Increasing demand for WASH through community clubs

Washiriki is a Kiswahili word that refers to participants or people cooperating to achieve a set goal.  In our case, the WASH in WASHiriki also refers to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Our approach involves bringing people together in community clubs where lessons on WASH are delivered weekly, facilitated by a Community WASH Promoter trained and supported by Aqua Clara. Beyond the weekly lessons, the WASHiriki approach also involves coming together to select and adopt appropriate WASH technologies. The lessons are delivered mainly through song, dance & drama to make them engaging and accommodate people of varied age-groups and literacy levels.

The first WASHiriki cohort consists of 140 members in Borabu, Nyamira County. The first phase focused on household water treatment with 120 members buying Aqua Clara water filters. The next phase will focus on Hygiene and Sanitation. We are also planning to roll out WASHiriki in Bomet & Migori Counties in the course of 2019 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and interested NGOs.

Monitoring and Evaluation
March 2019
We started the exercise of monitoring 595 filters randomly selected as part of our annual carbon credits monitoring exercise. 18 monitoring agents have been trained on survey and water sampling skills…We will physically visit all these filters, establish filter use and performance and carry out water testing. Past water test results have indicated zero presence of E. coli in all samples of water treated using Aqua Clara water filters.

PARTNERSHIP NEWS

Partnership Development

We know that for us to achieve our goals, we need to partner with like-minded organizations both locally and internationally. As such, we are always looking for ways we can deepen our relationship with our existing partners as well as reaching out to new ones. This quarter, we have made some good progress with our existing partners and have also been able to develop new partnerships.

  • We have signed an agreement with Transform International for the renovation & expansion of our office. The office includes a training hall, workspace, workshop and storage as well as a kitchen.  Additionally, the funding will cover School WASH activities.
  • We are in the process of finalizing an Agreement with CAWST for 2019 to cover our activities under H20PE Accelerator. These include Training and Consulting, WASH Incubator and WASHiriki.
  • We have signed distribution agreements with two local NGOs- ALICE Visionary who work in Kisumu County and Konnect Youth Consortium who work in Kericho and Narok Counties. Through these partnerships, we have trained and continue to support 80 Sales Agents. The agents have already sold 141 water filters between January and March, providing more than 846 people with safe drinking water and improving income for the agents.
