Green Tip

Eating local and seasonal foods is beneficial to your health and the environment—shorter transport routes mean fewer greenhouse gas emissions and fresher foods retain more nutrients. Find local foods at area farmers’ markets. The Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market occurs at University Place on Estes Drive every Tuesday and Saturday. The Carrboro Farmers’ Market is held each Wednesday and Saturday at the end of Main Street. Both markets sell exclusively local produce as well as baked goods and dairy products. Find out what’s in season »

Carolina Green Sustainability Social

Are you Carolina Green? Get involved to help make UNC a more sustainable campus! Meet students, faculty, and staff who advance sustainability through courses, research, and projects. Many of the departments provide internship opportunities. Learn about Chancellor Folt’s Three Zeros Initiative to move towards water neutrality, zero waste, and greenhouse gas neutrality. Sustainable refreshments will be provided. The event takes place during Week of Welcome, from 5-7pm in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union Art Gallery on Thursday August 25. Read more »

New Guide Makes Fishy Decisions Safer

The “Eat Fish, Choose Wisely” website, newly published through the UNC Superfund Research Program, helps local anglers avoid polluted waterways and identify fish that may have been contaminated. A map guide and fish advisories show safe species to consume from specific fishing sites. There’s also nutritional advice and serving recommendations. Read more »

Sustainable Business Class Added for Fall Enrollment

Enrollment is open for "Sustainable Enterprise and Social Entrepreneurship" (BUSI 507H), a business class that examines sustainability strategies to reduce environmental impacts through the supply chain and corporate social responsibility. Due to the popularity of this class, previously offered only during spring semesters, an additional fall offering is now available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30-1:45pm with Professor Carol Hee.

Styrofoam Recycling Drive

A tractor trailer will be stationed at the Branson Basketball Court in Odum Village from August 15-22 to collect your University Operations Styrofoam waste. Styrofoam must be clean and dry, and does not include packing peanuts, to-go boxes, or cups. Download the flier to post and share with colleagues and for further guidelines. Contact the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling with any questions.
