Green Tip:

Avoid Two-Day Shipping for the Holidays

Free two-day shipping may seem like a no-brainer, but think twice before you order. Speedy deliveries mean more trucks on the road and less efficiency, so fewer packages are transported in each vehicle. Choosing 2-day delivery can increase the carbon footprint of your purchase by 30%! Another good reason to get your holiday shopping done early this year.

The Center on Financial Risk in Environmental Systems is a newly launched partnership between UNC’s Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and the UNC Institute for the Environment. UNC Institute for the Environment Developing a Tool to Predict the Impact of Transportation Emissions

In collaboration with the U.S. EPA, scientists at the UNC Institute for the Environment are developing a suite of local-scale air quality screening tools called C-TOOLS (Community Air Quality Tools). These Web-based tools predict the impact of transportation emissions on communities. The software overlays pollution dispersions on Google maps so decision makers can test the implications of widening a road or building a school near a major highway, for example. C-TOOLS was developed with funding from the U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development.
