Energy Efficient Appliances

When purchasing new appliances, look for devices that are energy efficient. Not only are they good for the environment, but they also save money. The average American family saved nearly $500 on utility bills in 2015 as a direct result of existing efficiency standards for appliances and lighting according to a new report issued by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP) and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Battle Grove a Model for Living-Learning Lab

The Battle Grove Restoration Project engages students in learning about the campus environment. The project features an aboveground, daylit stream, that had previously been in an underground pipe. The stream and surrounding vegetation naturally filter pollutants from runoff in order to improve water quality. Dr. Geoffrey Bell also saw a learning opportunity for a team of students in his Restoration Ecology service learning class.  The students’ measurements of baseflow nutrient levels are important in understanding the high nutrient levels in Jordan Lake, which is further down the watershed. Dr. Bell’s course serves as a model for living-learning labs, which Chancellor Folt has advocated for as an integral part of the Three Zeros Initiative. Read more »

New NASA grant enlists North Carolinians to measure water stored in NC lakes

Tamlin Pavelsky, an associate professor of global hydrology in the UNC Department of Geological Sciences, normally receives data on lakes via satellite images, but his new grant from NASA will allow him to create a prototype citizen science program. Citizen collected data will fill in the gaps of satellite imaging and create a more accurate understanding of water storage in NC’s lakes.  This program will work on training citizen scientists, as well as establishing programs to process the new data. Read more »
