Green Tip

Stay cool this summer and save energy. Keep your electric bill low by covering windows with light-colored blinds and think about installing shades or awnings to block the sun.  A ceiling or portable fan circulates cooler air.  Read more »

Battle Grove Stormwater Project Introduces Wetlands and Water Quality

A new campus project has turned a frequently flooded field near McIver Residence Hall into a small above-ground stream.  Before the project was completed, water from the creek was contained by an underground pipe and concrete ditch. The field’s stream naturally filters pollutants and contaminants from runoff water. The restoration project is one of many stormwater mitigation efforts here on campus to improve water quality further downstream.  Read more »

Chemistry Department Receives Greenovation Recycling Award

The UNC Undergraduate Chemistry Department was recently recognized by Kimberly-Clark Professional’s RightCycle program for nitrile glove recycling efforts. Undergrad chemistry labs diverted 1,750 pounds of nitrile gloves—used for nonhazardous lab and cleanroom waste—from the landfill. The gloves will be recycled into raw materials for eco-friendly consumer products and goods. Read more »

Hope Gardens Summer Workdays

Volunteer with Hope Gardens, a community space that fosters relationships, educates the community, and addresses food access barriers, on Saturdays from 10am-noon throughout the summer.  Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and bring a water bottle! Read more »

Sustainability and Energy Workshop and Lecture Series

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series on sustainability and energy. Participants will engage these issues through lectures, panel discussions, collaborative research projects, networking opportunities, and tours of sustainability and energy related sites in the Chicago area. The program runs from August 4-16. Applications are due by July 1. Read more » 

Summer Grassroots Training (SPROG)

The Sierra Student Coalition will host a summer program on tools for environmental and social justice activism. SPROG is led by college-age and recent graduates, and is a week of intensive training, with emphasis on planning and leadership skills. There are four different national locations – the east coast event is in Courtland, VA from July 24-31. Read more »
