Health Department Announces Closure of Philadelphia Dental Practices

PHILADELPHIA--The Philadelphia Department of Public Health, working in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of State, has announced the closure of three Philadelphia dental practices for improper reprocessing and sterilization of dental equipment and lapses in injection safety practices. These practices put the safety of patients at risk and forced the closure of all three Trieu Family Dental Clinics, located at 437 West Chew Avenue, 5427 North 5th Street, and 6536 Woodland Avenue. Patients of these clinics are advised to contact their regular healthcare providers to be tested for hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, and HIV. The Health Department believes the risk of infection to be low, and is not aware of any infections as a result of these unsafe practices.

Upon receipt of an anonymous tip, Health Department investigators visited the clinics and observed unsafe infection control practices. All three were closed on December 7, 2018. Since that time, the Health Department has been working with the staff of these clinics to update their infection control practices, re-educate staff, and obtain patient lists. The PA Department of State is also conducting a separate investigation. None of these clinics will be allowed to re-open until the Health Department is satisfied that all unsafe practices have been remedied.

The Health Department has notified all patients who received dental care at any of the three Trieu Family Dental Clinics between January 1, 2017 and December 7, 2018 by letter recommending that they see their regular healthcare provider for testing. In the event that these patients do not have a regular healthcare provider, the letter lists a number of clinics in their neighborhood that can help with the testing.

The Health Department has set up a hotline for any patients who may have questions about the clinics, or about their potential exposure. They are encouraged to call (215) 218-2999 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
