All of us at San Francisco Aid for Animals (SFAfA) hope that you and your loved ones are keeping safe and healthy during these difficult times.  The mission of SFAfA is more relevant today than ever – we exist to serve the local community and, whatever the circumstances, we're here to keep companion animals and their families together. Born out of the 2008 financial crisis, our founding veterinarians saw an opportunity to help Bay Area residents experiencing financial hardship avoid the needless suffering, euthanasia or surrender of their animal companions by providing grants for urgent, treatable veterinary care. The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak has brought extraordinary challenges over the past weeks to Bay Area citizens and local vets who are often small businesses.  We continue to partner closely with our participating hospitals to support them in their work.  In light of recent events, SFAfA will be increasing its financial commitment to those hospitals over the next quarter.   This will give our partner vets more opportunities to secure the health and welfare of animals whose families have been impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak in the Bay Area.  Your support has equipped us for moments like these, helping us prepare for the unimaginable while enabling affordable care for the pets of this city.  And your support remains invaluable today. Please consider making a gift to help us and support our cause

Donate today and DOUBLE the power of your gift! A group of continuous supporters, advocates, and generous donors has offered to match the first $2,500 in donations that SFAfA receives through May 31st.

Papa's Story - My name is Margo Mehl and I’m a veterinary surgeon at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, one of San Francisco Aid for Animals’ participating hospitals. I want to personally thank you for your generous donations that help many animals. I also want to tell you about Papa, a 4 year old Chihuahua that jumped out of his owners’ arms and broke his front leg (radius and ulna). I’m always amazed at how many little dogs injure themselves jumping out of their owners’ arms and I used to not understand how it happens until I met Papa. It became clear very quickly that Papa pretty much only likes certain women and will do anything to get to them!

He had surgery at VCA/SFVS for his broken leg, and during his recovery became obsessed with Mirabelle one of our tech assistants. If you were holding Papa (he was so cute it was hard not to) he would spend the entire time cranking his head around frantically looking for Mirabelle and, and if she walked anywhere near you, he would pretty much launch himself out of your arms towards her. Papa’s owner adored him and was so grateful he was as good as new.
