Dear Friend,

With the help of animal lovers like you, since 2012 San Francisco Aid for Animals (SFAfA) has been making grants in aid to families in need of urgent veterinary care for their companion animals. 450 pets and counting, we are committed to our community and to providing the support that keeps companion animals healthy and with the families that love them. A tremendous thank you as always goes to our partner hospitals, with whom we have together provided over a half a million dollars in aid.

As we celebrate our 7-year legacy, we highlight one of our founding team members, Dr. Alan Stewart. When Alan isn't traveling the country providing specialized veterinary relief, or pursuing his career as an emerging playwright, he continues to play a vital role on the SFAfA board.

Alan's love and commitment to animals began at an early age. He recalls: "My earliest memory is of wanting to be a veterinarian. I never wavered from that course.  Even when offered a Fulbright fellowship to study at Oxford University, I opted to go to veterinary school." After completing his veterinary studies, Alan settled in the Bay Area and began his practice as an Internist, a career he has enjoyed for over 30 years.
Over the course of his veterinary career, Alan watched as the price for specialty medicine steadily soared. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, this trend only grew as pet care owners faced the hardships of the recession. That is when four veterinarians in the Bay Area bonded together to create San Francisco Aid for Animals. Those vets are Dr. Anne Marie Benfatto, Dr. Chris Anderson, Dr. Ilana Strubel and, of course, Dr. Alan Stewart.

Alan fondly recalls one of his most memorable SFAfA cases: "I had the luxury of taking care of this little Chihuahua named Gizmo. He was extraordinarily opinionated and somewhat aggressive. Fortunately, Gizmo responded well to treatment for numerous severe illnesses and, over time, developed a fondness for me.  When he was well enough to receive dental care, SFAfA provided the money to make that possible. He was relieved of pain, his owners were happy and his quality-of-life vastly improved.
On his role in the creation of SFAfA's mission, Alan says: "I can sincerely say the thing I am most proud of is the creation and continuation of San Francisco Aid for animals. To me, this is worth dedicating my life to”.

Today, Alan continues to help the team evolve and thrive. Ultimately, Alan hopes the SFAfA model will inspire other veterinarian groups across the US. He shares, "We established a unique model with this organization and we hope to see it extended throughout the country at some point where it can go on helping thousands and thousands of more pets in need."
"I can sincerely say the thing I am most proud of is the creation and continuation of San Francisco Aid for Animals”.

co-founder, SFAfA
Thank you for your ongoing support of the San Francisco Aid for Animals mission.  With your help and our continuing partnership with more than 90 local veterinarians, SFAfA will be able to offer more grants in aid. Every dollar you donate turns into at least two dollars of pet care. This is accomplished by our requirement that the veterinary practices in our program contribute medical services of equal value to the grant we provide. We are proud that many of the hospitals contribute substantially more in services than we do in cash.

SFAfA is entirely volunteer-run. We have no paid staff and no office to support so most of your donation goes directly to keeping companion animals and their families together. Please take a moment to write a check and return it in the enclosed envelope or visit our website at to make a donation. Any amount you can afford is greatly appreciated. With your support, we can continue to grow. Your generous donation will allow the next dog, cat, bird or other companion animal facing an emergency, to stay with their family.

Thank you,
Kathy Hajopoulos
