Meet Isabel!  From the day Larry first met Isabel as a young rescue, she has been the light of his life.  “I said I’d try her for a day and that was 12 years ago!” Larry remembers fondly.

It’s been a hard 2020 for all of us but Isabel’s year took a turn for the worse in October when she landed badly on her leg while playing in the park.  Isabel was whimpering and Larry could tell she was in pain.  A midnight run to the emergency veterinary hospital for an x-ray confirmed Larry’s fears - Isabel had fractured her radius and ulna, the two bones that make up the lower front leg.  Completely treatable but estimates for the cost of surgery ran into several thousands.  Larry knew that he couldn’t let Isabel down but he met a dead end with every funding option he tried and time was running out.  “My first thought was to look around the house and see what I could sell.”  But Larry knew even that wouldn’t be enough.  Fortunately, Dr. Margo Mehl at VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists knew that SFAfA could help.  By combining Larry’s funds with a grant from SFAfA and a generous matching donation from VCA SFVS, Dr. Mehl was able to schedule Isabel’s surgery for the next day.

The surgery was a complete success and Isabel is home, back on her feet and getting stronger every day. Like most chihuahuas, Isabel is more often the one taking care of her humans but she’s getting used to being the patient.   Larry wants to thank all the staff at VCA SFVS for their skill and compassion and especially you, our SFAfA donors and supporters.  “You came at a really important time for Isabel and for me - we would have been completely lost without your help,” Larry recalls.  “It wasn’t just that Isabel had her leg put back together.  We had our lives put back together.”

Thank you for your ongoing support of the SFAfA mission and animals like Isabel. With your help and our continuing partnership with more than 90 local veterinarians, we can save more animals from euthanasia or surrender because their owners are faced with unexpected bills for urgent care that they cannot pay. The financial hardship created by the COVID-19 pandemic means that the need is as great today as it was when we first started our work.

SFAfA is entirely volunteer-run. We have no paid staff and no office to support, so that the maximum amount possible of your donation goes directly to keeping companion animals and their families together. Please take a moment to write a check and return it in the enclosed envelope or visit our website at sfafa.org to make a donation.  Any amount you can afford is greatly appreciated. Your generous donation will allow the next dog, cat, bird or other companion animal facing an emergency, to stay with their family.

We understand that times are challenging for everyone right now.  Even if you are not able to donate today, you can support our mission by sharing this message with friends, family and anyone who might be interested in SFAfA.

Thank you,

P.S. The tremendous turnout for  our virtual Thankful Tails Trot on Thanksgiving weekend surpassed all our expectations!  Here are just a few images from our furry supporters in case you missed it!
