Protecting our shipyards

I wrote to the Prime Minister asking for clarification on the future of the type-26 frigates being built on the Clyde.  The former Prime Minister stood in Govan shipyard in February 2015 and promised the workforce and community that these ships would be built on the Clyde, securing hundreds of jobs in the yards now, and providing a future for hundreds of young people looking for apprenticeships.  The delays now being seen from the Ministry of Defence are utterly unacceptable and leading to uncertainty.  We have even learned last week that the guns have been ordered for these frigates, while the workforce have yet to hear a start date for work to begin.  You can read my article on these delays at the STV website.

Glasgow needs action from the UK Government - not more mealy-mouthed words.  The people of Govan and Scotstoun deserve nothing less.

The Co-operative Economy

I was pleased to take part in the parliamentary debate on the role of co-operatives in the economy.  Co-operatives contribute over £34 billion to the UK economy, and pay more tax to the exchequer than Amazon, Facebook, Apple, eBay and Starbucks combined.  Worker participation and co-ownership offers a progressive model for the future.

Hold Blair to account on Iraq

The Chilcot Report has presented a range of evidence that demonstrates that Parliament and the country were misled by Tony Blair in the run up to the war in Iraq. Parliament should now agree a process by which it can hold the former Prime Minister to account.  The petition currently on the Parliament website is aimed at ensuring the Commons debates how we can establish a formal process to move forward following Chilcot.  You can sign the petition here.

Stop the thugs

The vandalism and destruction perpetrated by mindless thugs at Gowanbank Primary and St Monica's Primary is shocking.  My colleague Cllr David McDonald hosted a public meeting last week alongside Police Scotland and Community Safety Glasgow to discuss ways to tackle this kind of anti-social behaviour.  Over 150 local residents attended, with a great number of initiatives and plans to take forward in the future.  I hope and expect firm action to be taken against those responsible for this criminal activity once they are identified and prosecuted.

Get the facts on scams

The consumer organisation Which? have been kind enough to supply my office with copies of their guide "Safeguard yourself from scams".  This is packed with helpful advice on how to stay safe from crooks and fraudsters.  If you want a copy for yourself or a neighbour, or are from an organisation wanting copies in bulk, get in touch with my office on the details below and we'll get them out to you.

Your MP on YouTube

I am putting more and more of my speeches and contributions in Parliament up on YouTube.  Over time I hope this will build into an archive of my work at Westminster as your MP.  This is still in the early stages, however you can view the videos uploaded so far and subscribe to new uploads at my YouTube channel.

Fighting for you

My office are dealing with more and more cases involving DWP benefits, where individuals are falling through the cracks and not getting the support and help they are entitled to.  DWP staff are under increasing pressure from management and the government, while the right-wing UK government fight more and more to deny the most vulnerable in society even the most basic of benefits in the name of austerity.  If you have an issue with your DWP benefits, or any other measure you need help with, please contact my constituency office.
If you have an issue you want me to help with as your MP, please get in touch.  Call 0141 883 0875, email, visit my website at, or drop by the office at 1612 - 1614 Paisley Road West, G52 3QN.  I am here to help.
