Meet our new Industrial Service Centre: SOLVOMET
SIM² KU Leuven is delighted to announce that it has just launched a new Industrial Service Centre, which is focussed on "solvometallurgy". SOLVOMET’s mission is to support its industrial partners in the development of more sustainable solvometallurgical separation processes and new mining chemicals, which are subsequently tested using lab-scale and mini pilot-scale experimental facilities.
The Centre is set up to industrially valorise the expertise in solvometallurgy that is developed in Prof. Koen Binnemans’ ERC Advanced Grant SOLCRIMET. The Centre works in synergy with the HiTemp Centre and SIM² KU Leuven, as the goal is to embed the developed chemicals and processes into comprehensive (near) zero-waste valorisation flow sheets for base and critical-metal-containing primary and secondary  resources.

Full programme 4th Enhanced Landfill Mining Symposium & Early Bird Registration
On 5 and 6 February, 2018, the 4th Enhanced Landfill Mining Symposium (ELFM IV) is taking place in Mechelen, Belgium. In the meantime the organising committee has released the full Symposium programme (pdf available here). The Symposium will feature 15 keynote lectures and an additional 8 oral presentations and 15 poster pitch presentations. The lecture collectively combine all parts of the ELFM value chain, both for Municipal Solid Waste landfills and industrial mono-landfills containing extractive waste or industrial process residues. Speakers come from both industry, academia, public bodies and civil society. Early Bird registration for this Symposium is now possible. The organising committee hopes to welcome you in Mechelen!

SIM² GA, 10-11-2017
On November 10, 2017, SIM² KU Leuven holds its General Assembly in Novotel, Leuven. During this meeting an overview will be given of the general status of SIM² KU Leuven (Peter Tom Jones), while Karel Van Acker will provide an update on the EIT RawMaterials KIC. Tom Van Gerven will present the new SIM² Research Line on Process Intensification. Afterwards there will be several interactive sessions. SIM² KU Leuven Members (ZAP, research managers, postdocs) can register here.
Meet our new SIM² KU Leuven Researchers
Vidmantas Bieliūnas is a new SIM² KU Leuven researcher working on the EU MSCA-ETN COSMIC project on process intensification in the chemical industry. Read more about this PhD researcher here >
Basit Ali is a new SIM² KU Leuven researcher working on the electrodeposition of Sm-Co magnetic alloys from ionic liquids (ILs). Read more about this PhD researcher here >
Bauxite Residue 2018 Conference (Athens)
The 2nd Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices conference will take place in May 2018 in Athens. The Organisers cordially invite all interested participants to submit paper(s) to be featured at the Conference. All submitted abstracts will undergo a review with accepted abstracts selected in either oral or poster format. The extended deadline for abstract submission is October 8, 2017.
ELFM featured on China Global TV Network
In the aftermath of the publication of the animated promotional videos of ETNs NEW-MINE and SOCRATES, SIM² KU Leuven was contacted by China Global Television Network (CGTN) who made a brief report on the projects’ ground-breaking research and the associated barriers and opportunities for Enhanced Landfill Mining.

SIM² KU Leuven is deeply saddened to hear the news that our wonderful colleague, Prof. Risto Harjula (University of Helsinki), has passed away on September 11, 2017. We offer our sincere condolences to Risto’s family and Helsinki colleagues. For us, Risto Harjula was one of the greatest persons we have ever worked with in our EU projects. We fully agree with Risto’s colleague, Prof. Risto Koivula, that “we have to remember Risto’s joy and genuine excitement with chemistry, research and finding new things that can benefit people. For him science was not just writing papers it was making the world into a better place.” Risto, it was an absolute pleasure working with you. We will deeply miss you (Peter Tom Jones, Rabab Nasser, Lucian Onisei, Yiannis Pontikes, Bart Blanpain, Karel Van Acker, Tom Van Gerven & Koen Binnemans, for SIM² KU Leuven).
