Who Can YOU Tell About SAWA?
The Passing of our Girl, Njoki
As many of you know, on July 31 we lost one of our children at El Shadai.  Rachael Njoki had been ill and in and out of doctors' offices for a few weeks when she was ultimately brought to a government hospital.  The doctors sent her to a nearby hospital for a lung x-ray and they determined that she had tuberculosis, and started her on rigorous treatment the following day.  That night, she started to have trouble breathing and was placed on oxygen when she awoke in the morning.  By that time, her lungs had suffered too much damage and she passed away later that day.  After her death, the hospital told our staff that the secondary location (where she had her x-rays done) had given her a bad diagnosis, and she in fact did NOT have TB; but she likely passed from pneumonia which was worsened by the strong TB treatment.  We are still horrified and heartbroken and we have all tried our best to make sense of what happened.  But unfortunately, medical care is just not as advanced as it is here…and we will never know for sure what happened or why her two previous rounds of antibiotics did not cure the pneumonia.   I can assure you that our staff in Kenya did all that they could to take care of Njoki during this time.

I traveled to Kenya on August 4th to attend Njoki’s burial, and I am so grateful for all of your donations that made her funeral arrangements possible.  Her beautiful soul was celebrated well that day.  It was an impossible day; but she was laid to rest with all of the dignity and respect that she deserved through proper arrangements that would NOT have been possible without your donations. We pride ourselves on providing basic things for the children at El Shadai so they don’t feel like orphans; and this day was no exception.  Njoki was laid to rest properly, surrounded by her entire family—and that includes all of you.
$100,000 Milestone!
Well everyone....WE'VE DONE IT!! SAWA has officially raised over $100,000 in only two short years!  It has been an amazing journey, and we are so grateful to all of our supporters.

Keep an eye out for our Holiday Fundraiser at the end of November.  Please send your address to SomeoneAWorldAway@gmail.com if you'd like to be added to our physical mailing list!
Building Update
This month, we were finally able to complete a major step...the basement foundation has been completed and the concrete for the basement floor has been poured!

Subsequent projects will cost anywhere from  $5,000-10,000 per project--completing the foundation for the front half, building basement walls/steps/ceiling, etc.

We are looking for ANY and ALL donations...big and small!  If you can assist us in any way at all, please don't be shy!  We have a large donor base, and even the smallest contributions could help us reach this goal so we can start/finish our first major level of our new building!

We've yet to reach our halfway benchmark of what we raised last year...so we are hoping that in the next several months we can SURPASS our number from last year and hit the ground running in 2017 when Cara returns to Kenya!

We hope you will consider making another contribution this year to help us build our new school and home!

Our Scouts
Three of our boys have been asked to join the Scouts program at their school: Nelson, Peter, and Ian (not pictured...his uniform was dirty!)

As scouts, they will learn an array of life skills, similar to Boy Scouts here in the states.

Experience in Scouts programs is well respected for people who go into service jobs like the Kenya Police, Army, etc.  We are proud that our boys were asked to join, and we congratulate them on their acceptance!

Who can YOU tell about SAWA today?
We are currently seeking meetings with anyone and everyone who might be able to help us in the building process.  We have barely scratched the surface of the building project…and we have a long road ahead!!  If you have any connections to any “major players” who might be able to help us score the big bucks please let us know!  We are pursuing meetings with everyone from celebrities to professional athletes to corporate executives.

If you think you know someone who could help…let us know!!!

Think about how YOU can spread the word TODAY!

Plans for 2016

  • Water at the new plot.  DONE! We connected water to the plot in January.  The kids and staff now have full-time access to water...a luxury they've lived without for years.
  • Begin building foundation.      DONE!  We have already hired engineers to start the building process. We have obtained official maps and approval, and we are starting the foundation for the plot this month.  We will move forward one floor at a time as funds allow.
  • Install a septic system.  One of our major priorities is to improve the sanitary conditions for the children. Each floor of the new home will have bathrooms and running water. This will improve sanitation AND safety, as the children currently use a community latrine.
