Southern MagnoliaJune Bloom includes the beautiful Edith Bogue Southern Magnolia. A large specimen can be found by the Native Plant Demonstration Garden in front of the Knippenberg Center and in the area of   Ridge Road and Long Valley Road. With its large glossy leaves, enormous highly fragrant white flowers and unusual seed cones, the Southern Magnolia  is always beautiful. A wood carving of a blossom by Roberta Boothney and painted by artist and longtime FOLA member  and volunteer Bob Shine, is on display in the Knippenberg Center for Education.

Volunteer on-site Tuesdays and Fridays  9 a.m.-noon.
Meet in the pavilion.



Join us for an afternoon of tea, ‘crumpets,’ entertainment and FUNdraising.
Tea party style dress up encouraged.
Raffles, storybook characters, door prizes & more!
Proceeds to benefit children’s programs.

How do I take care of my rhododendrons? They flowered well in the spring, and I want to be sure that they stay in good condition.

Dear Rhoda,
It appears that you are already doing a good job on the maintenance of your plants. Rhododendrons and azaleas require little care once they are properly established. Two inches of mulch will keep down weeds. Mulch should be moved away from direct contact with stems to reduce diseases and insect damage. No cultivation should be done because the shallow, fine roots are easily damaged. (continue reading...)
