World Health Day is a global health awareness day, celebrated every year on April 7th. The World Health Organization (WHO) is behind the day and the focus for 2016 was on diabetes. IDF Young Leaders from all over the world took this opportunity to spread awareness, engage with the public, and complete interesting projects. Nice work!
Estefania Agostina, Argentina
My association (CUI.D.AR, or the Association for the Care of Diabetes in Argentina) shared pictures from people with type 1 diabetes (it's almost unknown here!) on social media.
The photos include name, age, and age at diagnosis. With more than 20,500 Facebook followers, the campaign went really well!
"There are no impossible dreams."
("No hay sueños imposibles.")
Jenifer Duarte, Portugal
In Portugal, Young Leaders in Diabetes partnered with the Lisbon City Council and other entities, where the theme was "diabetes and healthier living habits."
Young Leaders were also present for a ceremony in the Assembly of the Republic about "Diabetes in Portugal," where the Ministry of Health presented an award to the President of the Portuguese Diabetes Association and the President of the Portuguese Society of Diabetology.
The following day, a European Commission initiative was held to address similar issues.
Francesca Isabel Villanueva - Philippines
The Philippines is known to create a buzz when it comes to social media - and Filipinos can never go a day without posting something about their lives. What better way, then, to celebrate World Health Day 2016, with the theme "Beat Diabetes," than by sharing about who we are and how we handle living with diabetes through social media? This banner is a compilation of the posts on social media.
Check out this video of the 2016 WHO World Health Day summit in Geneva, Switzerland. Our very own Florence Banda, an IDF Young Leader from Zambia, represented young people with diabetes from around the world.
Look for Florence's eloquent presentation around the 22:54 mark.
Other Media Highlights
IDF YLD Vice President Heng Pei Yan was elected to the Executive Council during the General Assembly in Vancouver. She was recently featured in a Singapore newspaper for her efforts to improve life for people with diabetes around the world and she received a Singapore Health Inspirational Patient & Caregiver Award for 2016. We love you, Pei Yan!
IDF YLD alum Elizabeth Rowley is the founder and director of the nonprofit diabetes advocacy organization, T1International. T1International recently conducted an Insulin & Diabetes Supply Survey to illustrate some of the exorbitant prices people with diabetes are forced to pay for their insulin and other critical supplies in communites all over the world. 100 people have completed the survey from 39 different countries, and the organization has shared some colorful new infographics and posted the findings on Tumblr, promoting them with the hashtag #insulin4all.

Here's how the IDF describes the camp, which will be held from July 11 - 17, 2016:
As in previous years, the programme will cover practical, recreational as well as educational aspects including workshops and physical activity sessions in a vibrant, interactive and international setting where you can learn from faculty as well as each other.
The YLC is a unique opportunity for you, European youth advocates, to share your experience, learn about topics which will help you in your advocacy activities and be involved in IDF Europe’s work by contributing your perspective as a cross-cutting dimension of all our activities and advocacy work.
