Dear Friends of the Sanctuary,

The sun has guided me outside to the Sanctuary gardens again, my favorite spot to think (while also keeping my distance). As Tayloranne's sunflowers sway in the ocean breeze above my head, I'm revisiting the new song sent to us by our musician friend John Elliott. Here is what he wrote:

"NEW SINGLE: Sanctuary. Another song from the forthcoming new album is streaming where you stream. I wrote and recorded it while I was the artist in residence at @creative.sanctuary in Arcata. I could not reconcile the kindness and abundance I was experiencing in Humboldt County with the news of caged children and separated families. I know I won the lottery before I could even breathe. Still, my good fortune coexisting with so much suffering does not make any sense to me. I refuse to believe that we have to live with such blatant and brutal inequality."

Many of us are having difficulties reconciling our joys and gifts with the pain and strife in our own lives and the lives of others. Empathy is the driving force of my life, and I am always thinking of what I can do even when I need help. Pandemic, racial injustice, homelessness, immigration, the climate crisis, poverty... all are coalescing to create a more unequal and atomized society. I also refuse to believe that it has to be that way, and so I support those community projects that are helping people live the lives they want and deserve. I can't fight every battle, so I do what I can in the ways that I can.

The Sanctuary is still a place of exchange during the time of COVID. The J St. Regulars Radio Hour is going strong, with even more special guests in the mix on Wednesdays. The web store allows us to sell Studio Artists' work to support them financially. Our studio artists are working on a series of artist prompts and song circles to keep artists in community. If you need anything, you can always call at (707) 822-0898 or send an email and we'll try our best to connect you to what you need. If you want to get the word out on something you're doing, drop me a line at

With love and solidarity,
Katy Warner

From Alison Kinney and Cyrus Smith: "We are delighted at long last to share our most recent collection of songs. At a time when we cannot visit you in your homes, we hope these songs will sit with you in your living room, tell you stories, and give you hugs as we would like to do. Marigold was recorded in February of 2020 at the Sanctuary by Daniel Nickerson. We are so grateful to all those who contributed their voices and instrumentation to this project- @hazelrickard, @barbiehugs, @kyle.butz and @nanieldickerson, to @laurenrosekinney for the album design and printing, to @pocket.of.peanuts (Natalie Williams) for the album art and to @taylorannefinch for planting the marigolds that inspired the title track. You can find the album on bandcamp, Spotify, and Apple Music. If you would like a physical copy, reach out to Alison on Instagram.

Community Supported Art (CSA)

We're please to announce even more options for sale on our CSA sales page, here's the direct link. This year, we have made the CSA more accessible to patrons by making each artist’s work available individually, and therefore more affordable than a full season of artwork.  There will be different artists featured each month, but each artist’s work will be available in our online gallery as long as there are pieces still available from the series of work. Each piece is only $35, including shipping.

Featured Artist: Violet Crabtree

Violet Crabtree is a studio artist at the Sanctuary. Her first volunteer project there was to make curtains for all the windows in the Great Hall. They are very unique, appliquéd designs made of upcycled fabric, and her latest pillow creations use the same technique. Her designs are whimsical, often using elements of science fiction and fantasy. Only one pillow remains of the seven she created this month, Queen Bee. $35.00 dollars at the Sanctuary webstore.

Each Wildcard Wednesday features our friends and neighbors as they come forward with something to share. Last Wednesday the Wildcard lineup was arrange by Sean Pitney. We had the radical combination of his collaborations Cold Light of Day and Los Perditos, alongside some cuts from the past artists in residence. Neighbor Carson McHaney performed the mandolin for his contributions, and the videos are now available to all on Youtube. Daniel Nickerson will return as host on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and James Zeller on Mondays and Fridays.
