December at the Sanctuary

Zigtebra, Puppet Slam and a Pop-up Shop of Holiday Gifts

Dear Friends of the Sanctuary,

We have thoroughly celebrated the harvest of Autumn this past month with a true feast and fancy dress at Fancy Night, the Sanctuary’s first dinner fundraiser event. Cheers to all who came and made it a magical evening, volunteers and guests alike. Now, before the Sanctuary goes into a brief winter hibernation, we have one last array of fantastical fun for you: a strand of music and dance, crafts and puppets, nourishment and warmth, to thread your December days with. The winter wind may storm our doors, but it bears tidings of good things too…
Warm Regards,

Natalie

Extension to Open Calls and Exhibition Proposals // Friday December 6th

Thank you to all the creators who have submitted residency and gallery proposals. We are delighted by your letters and inspired by the work you are creating. Many of you shared a similar sentiment... the desire to commit yourself to your creative practice and to focus on your artwork... what can happen if you give your artist self the chance?
⁣⁣
We'd like to give more of you a chance. We want to hear from anyone who has thought to apply and maybe had self-doubt, started an application but didn't finish, or has worries about scheduling. ⁣We are interested in you as an artist, and looking to work with you.⁣
⁣⁣
We believe that creativity is a necessary component in crafting the communities we live in, and in designing a society we wish to be a part of.⁣ This is an invitation to participate in our community here in Arcata.⁣ Click here for our application guidelines for both residencies and exhibition proposals.

We are extending our open call through the week, submissions are due by Friday, December 6th.⁣

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Tayloranne Finch

AJ Lee & Blue Summit // Friday December 6th

Freshgrass 2019 Band Contest Winner, IBMA 2019 Momentum Vocalist of the Year, second place at the 2019 Winfield Guitar Competition, and numerous awards in Northern California illustrate the kind of recognition this bluegrass / americana band has been getting recently. Headed by singer, songwriter, and mandolinist AJ Lee, the band has been deeply involved in the California bluegrass scene since they were toddlers, and since then have developed their sound and added influences outside of bluegrass, including swing, folk, blues, jazz, country, soul, and rock. $10 - $25 sliding scale, doors open at 7:30 p.m. and show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Open Lab // Saturday December 7th & 14th

Open Lab is a perfect opportunity to work on hand-made gifts for the holidays. Come by for one or both of the last two of the year. Work on card-making, sewing, canning, printing, book-binding… almost any project you can dream up, we have the tools to help. Open Lab will of course be returning next year, always offering a safe harbor for our creative selves. 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, returning again on February 1st.

Fundraiser for AHHA // Sunday December 8th

John Elliott, the Andy Kaufman of folk music, is embarking on a traveling benefit tour in December. Each show will be a collaboration with local artists doing short sets, and a benefit for a non-profit organization specific to each community. In Arcata, all proceeds will go to Affordable Homeless Housing Alternatives (AHHA), who have led the effort to create tiny homes here in Humboldt.
Everyone is welcome at these shows and every dollar will be donated to AHHA, thanks to a sponsorship by Jill MacDonald, realtor. The intention is to gather together at the end of a turbulent year and celebrate art and good groups doing good work for the greater good. Other performers include Leslie Castellano from Synapsis, Joanne McGarry, Violet Crabtree, the Cowtown Serenaders, and our own Solomon Lowenstein. $10 - $25 sliding scale, doors at 5:30 p.m., show starts at 6:00 p.m. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Sewing Night // Sunday December 8th

Bring your holiday projects and darn-able socks to the last sewing night of the year. Use our vast array of industrial and domestic machines, notions and fabric to make an old garment pop. Or create something completely new or add a new twist to a favorite old piece, the choice is yours. Sewing experts will be on hand to help you through your project at any stage of your process. Bring a treat and enjoy the records from our library while you work! 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., $5 - $20 suggested donation.

Zigtebra Community Music Video //
Friday December 13th

Zigtebra is an indie art pop band and the current Sanctuary Artists in Residence. They want your help with their latest music video! Joe Zeph will facilitate a vocal recording booth for anyone to come and contribute a vocal take for the chorus. All skill levels and ages will be included, supported, and encouraged to participate. Meanwhile, Emily will have a video setup pointed to the stage, and will teach people in groups how to do a simple dance move to the simple beat playing in the room. Folks are encouraged to try on items from the Sanctuary’s costume closet. The final hour of the event will be spent fielding questions about DIY audio production, writing, touring, music video production, or anything else community members have always wanted to know from a touring band.

The recording sessions will be from 4 to 6 p.m. as we transition into Arts! Arcata and our Wintertime Pop-up Shop that evening. Come on by and contribute a wiggle or a line to this collaborative community music video.

Wintertime Pop-up Shop // Friday and Saturday // December 13th and 14th

The Sanctuary hosts a Pop-Up Shop this winter season featuring artworks and handmade crafts made by artists and friends of the Sanctuary. On December 13th 6 to 9 p.m. and December 14th 12 to 6 p.m, you are invited to come by and enjoy handmade goods, refreshments and treats, music, and warmth in our upstairs venue. A selection of small works from the Fair will be in the gallery from December 6th to the 17th, and may be seen during any Sanctuary event.

Professor Williker's Puppet Slam //
Saturday December 14th

With days short and nights long, please join us inside for a series of contemporary short form puppet and object theatre performances centered around themes of light, winter, gathering and connection. There will be local acts, traveling acts, and live music. Performances are for adult audience and are experimental by nature. Come get cozy and celebrate the many diverse traditions of Puppet Theatre in this intimate, tactile and compelling form of entertainment. This production is a collaboration with the Arcata Playhouse, who has hosted these events for many years. $10 - $25, doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.

Winter Closure // December 18th through January 31st

We’ll be closed for building improvements and quiet time, returning February 1st. We'll miss you and are excited for what 2020 will bring!
