WALTHAM ABBEY: Students act as museum guides for Takeover Day at Epping Forest District Museum

Students from King Harold Academy in Waltham Abbey acted as guides when the Epping Forest District Museum in Waltham Abbey took part in the national Takeover Day event.

The students demonstrated the knowledge they had learned about various displays and items to give guided tours around the Sun Street venue.

Various exhibits were also explained to Upshire Primary School children who also took part in activities at the museum.

Year 7 King Harold Academy students Grace Cooper and Tilly Giddy showed Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing and Epping Forest District Council chairman councillor Helen Kane around the museum.

Dame Eleanor said: "It was a pleasure to visit the Epping Forest District Museum and be shown round by Grace and Tilly. Their knowledge of the displays was amazing and they would certainly make good museum guides or curators in the future!

"The museum is a fantastic place with so much of our local history recorded there, including many artefacts that have been recovered from around the Epping Forest area."

LOUGHTON: School pays tribute to former student fatally stabbed

A former Roding Valley High School student who was fatally stabbed has been remembered as a talented footballer and someone who "approached school life with great humour and positivity".

Kamran Khalid, 18 - who also attended Staples Road School in Loughton - was stabbed in Ilford during the recent half-term holiday.

He left Roding Valley High School two years ago.

Headteacher Sharon Jenner said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. As a mark of respect, the school has opened a book of condolence for his teachers and students who knew him."

She added: "Kamran was also a former Staples Road School student and will be remembered fondly as someone who approached school life with great humour and positivity, often entertaining his classmates and teachers with funny stories.

"He was also a talented footballer who represented the school team with pride and whose turn of speed and tricky feet were often the difference between winning and losing."

Police were called to reports of a fight in the early hours of Thursday, October 28.

Officers attended with medics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance.

Kamran was treated at the scene but despite the best efforts of the emergency services he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Two men, aged 18 and 24, have been charged with murder.

LOUGHTON: MP meets members of Loughton Green Champions’ Network

Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing met with members of the Loughton Green Champions' Network.

The St Michael's group was involved with the ‘Make COP26 Count’ Programme in the run-up to the UK hosting the COP26 Conference in Glasgow .

A group spokesman said: "Among other things, we talked about our eco-church awards, how we manage our buildings in a green way, working towards being fairtrade, providing recycling points for the community and saved food.

"We also explained why climate change is important to us as Christians: that for us it’s a social justice issue, because of its impact on our global brothers and sisters.

"We wanted to discuss with Dame Eleanor two important issues where we need her help at government level, beyond our influence as individuals or within our local churches."

The group particularly wanted to highlight the 'fair share of $100bn commitment' and the Gender Action Plan.

The group spokesman said: "Ahead of the Paris Agreement, signed at COP21 in December 2015, developed countries committed to mobilise $100 billion a year from 2020 to support developing countries to cut their carbon emissions and support their resilience response.

"Our concern is that the UK is only meeting 71 per cent of its fair share of this $100 billion.

"This year the UK also cut its overseas aid budget from 0.7 per cent of GNI to 0.5 per cent of GNI.

"The result is a reduction in UK aid of around £3.6 billion, which will have a significant impact on recipients who may have been anticipating this aid."

The group spokesman added: "The COP25 conference in Madrid last year adopted a five-year Gender Action Plan to support gender equality in the fight against climate change.

"For example, it’s often women and girls who have to collect water for families which makes it difficult for girls to attend school and get an education. And it’s often women who work in agriculture, so are impacted more by adverse weather conditions affecting the crops they can grow to feed their families and generate income.

"We feel that more needs to be done to target and monitor finance to support the Gender Action Plan."

Dame Eleanor said: "I was delighted to meet with the group and hear their views. It was great to see local people so passionate about green issues, and keen to get their views heard."

She added: "The group had written a very detailed letter which I passed on to the Prime Minister and Alok Sharma.

"We are all hoping that the result will be a good one."
