Epping Forest College invites deaf students to open event

Epping Forest College is encouraging deaf students or those who are hard-of-hearing who are leaving school this summer to attend its Open Event on Tuesday, June 27 (4pm-8pm).

Visitors will be able to find out about the courses on offer and view the college's facilities.

Students can also meet the professional, fully qualified CSW (Communication Support Worker) team which provides outstanding one-to-one support to students with a hearing loss.

They have many years of experience supporting students on all courses, at all levels, using any method of communication required.

The college understands the importance of making sure the needs of the deaf student is taken into account before they start their course. They will provide a CSW with the required skills to support the student throughout the course.

The type of specialist support provided can include British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE), manual or electronic notes, language modification and lip speaking.

Deaf awareness is a priority to ensure the learning environment is inclusive to the deaf student, so Deaf Awareness is promoted actively within the college.

The CSWs also supports the students to develop and strengthen their independence. In addition, if a work experience placement is part of their course, the college can support students to find a suitable position.

Deaf student Nilukshi Jeevapalan, 18, said: "I really enjoy coming to Epping Forest College and I have made a lot of progress and gained confidence coming here.

"The CSW team and staff have supported me really well. They use clear sign language and I can lip-read them easily. I left school and enrolled on BTEC IT Level 1 a few years ago and I am about to finish Level 2.

"I want to continue on to the two-year BTEC Level 3 ICT course and then work in IT in the future.

"I have also had two great work experience placements arranged by the college, which really helped me to gain valuable experience of the working environment.”
