Preventing Pandemics: a new report on zoonotic diseases coming soon 

Are pandemics the “new normal” or can we prevent them? What is the future of wet markets? Are these the questions you’ve been asking yourself since COVID-19 broke out this year? In July, UNEP and researchers from the International Livestock Research Institute will publish a scientific assessment: Preventing the Next Pandemic: zoonotic diseases and how to break the chain of transmission, that will seek to answer them.

#SafeHome campaign supports women and children at risk from domestic violence

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, countries around the world have been in confinement. This has led to a spike in violence against women and children at home with abusive relatives. FIFA, WHO, and the European Commission have joined forces to launch #SafeHome, a five-part video awareness campaign in which 15 past and present football players address this issue and offer their support.

Providing reliable and sustainable energy to the people of Gaza

Electricity shortages are a major challenge to people living in Gaza. Renewable energy is not only a climate friendly solution, but one that will help save lives and livelihoods. Khitam Saleem is a Gaza resident who has benefitted from hybrid solar systems installed on household rooftops. Without the support of UNOPS, her life would be more complicated and difficult. Using Lego to study the building blocks of the universe

CERN scientist Michael Deveaux was playing with his two-year old daughter one evening when he realised Lego could be the solution for the construction of a lightweight, activation-resistant material to test novel sensors. When he was convinced it would work, he submitted a report and the colourful device was installed. Tests were successfully implemented and gave scientists the information they needed. Sometimes, going back to basics is the best skill to develop!

Promoting nutrition through the power of music in Namibia 

Did you know that in Namibia one in four children suffer from stunted growth and development and less than half of all new-borns are exclusively breastfed in their first five months? Nutrition and Food Alliance Namibia (NAFSAN), supported by the SUN Movement Pooled Fund, supports children’s nutrition in Namibia. Up and coming Namibian artist Kalux uses music to promote the importance of nutrition. Let’s see how a catchy tune can change children’s lives!

CROWD4SDG – A new project to monitor climate impacts

Crowd4SDG is a new consortium project launched on 20 May 2020 led by UNITAR. It uses citizen science to monitor climate impacts and track progress made on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the goal of achieving climate resilience.
The WhatsApp Coronavirus Information Hub is a new initiative launched by WhatsApp in partnership with WHO, UNICEF and UNDP. It aims to reduce the spread of rumours by providing accurate health information for health workers, educators, community leaders, businesses and the like, who rely on this tool to communicate.

UN Digital Academy - new ICC Service for UN Digital Literacy 

Worldwide, because of COVID-19 precautions staff and stakeholders from almost every United Nations organization have been teleworking. This has been complicated for some units or individuals. ICC and the Tech for Social Impact Group at Microsoft recently launched the UN Digital Academy, a centralised learning platform which offers training to make working remotely easier.
