What Support Is Available for

Families, Carers & Key Support People?

"Supporting you to support your loved one."

A ‘carer’ is anyone supporting an individual with an eating disorder. A parent, sibling, partner, best friend, grandparent, health professional, school counsellor, chaplain or other significant person.

If you are seeking support for a loved one who is currently living with an eating disorder, or who you are worried about, we have several support options available for you.

You can contact EDQ directly on 07 3844 6055 and ask to schedule a coaching session either via Telehealth, phone or in person, with one of our experienced Carer Coaches.

We also provide other support options, including a monthly support group, community connection opportunities, our Fostering Recovery workshops and carer peer mentoring.

If your loved one is also accessing support with EDQ and both parties are willing, we now have the option to arrange for a joint consultation with you both. If this sounds like something that may be helpful to you, please ask one of our Carer Coaches for more information.
Our Carer Help Kit is an online resource that provides helpful resources and information on supporting a loved one with an eating disorder, including how to access Medicare rebates for counselling and dietetic appointments. We have also provided resources for health professionals who are seeking more information on how to care for clients presenting with an ED.
Shared Table Meal Support Training is another online option that provides you with the skills and confidence to provide meal support to your loved one in the home environment. You can find this training via the Carer Help Kit site. We have provided options for those currently engaged with Family Based Therapy, as well as those who are not.
Finally, we know this has been a difficult week with increased media coverage around grief & loss, for many in the eating disorder community in Queensland. We acknowledge this can be particularly hard for family members and carers.
We wanted to share this poignant letter from a fellow member of the Carer community, who sadly lost her daughter earlier this year.

"I hesitated about whether or not to write about [her] death, because I don’t want to scare any other parents out there. Our story is not your story. Your story can have a happy ending, you have to believe that. Eating disorders are treatable, and recovery is possible. Please, please hold onto your hope. I don’t want to project negativity. You all have enough of that to contend with. It’s just that I don’t want to hide my story either. We have always been open and honest about Gavriella’s eating disorder; and to me, this is a continuation of that honesty and openness.  For us, there was no shame or stigma. Our daughter had an illness that took her life. Others recover, but she didn’t. It’s tragic, and it’s devastating, and it ripped our world apart, and there is no blame."

You can view the letter in its entirety here. For those who are not familiar, F.E.A.S.T is a global support and education community of and for parents of those with eating disorders, based in the USA. They have some fantastic resources available including a forum, blog, and phone support.
