Welcome to the first edition of Music Makes Me Happy News!
We are happy to announce that the inaugural year of the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus is reaching happy high notes! It started with two friends and colleagues, Marsha and Kathryn, who had an idea back in April, and has turned into an enthusiastic musical community of 15 singers, 2 staff, and 6 volunteers. We are a non-profit chorus for adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities, which meets once a week to sing together, as well as to share
snacks and happenings from our lives.

Just to get you up to date...

Our SUMMER included many exciting events, including
  • 2 "Summer Sing" evenings where we sang our hearts out and met many potential chorus members.
  • A successful fundraising campaign through Tilt, which helped us pay for startup costs such as:
    • Publishing a website (,
    • Filing for and receiving official tax-exempt nonprofit status (YAY!)
    • Getting all our basic supplies and rental costs covered for the start of the year.
The FALL has been fantastic, too...

SEPTEMBER at our Music Makes Me Happy Chorus was a time to get to know each other and start bonding as friends who love singing together in a new chorus. We sang special welcome songs, songs about friends, and songs about being happy.

In OCTOBER we recorded an original Thank-You song for each of our summer donors, and then we got down to work on the Hanukkah and Christmas songs for our holiday concert.

At the first rehearsal in NOVEMBER each chorus member was given a holiday concert practice CD with accompanying song sheets and encouraged to be practicing at home, realizing that we only have a few weeks until our concert!

Already we feel like friends; and while we are working to improve as a chorus, our friendship will continue to grow even stronger. We are off to a wonderful start, and that makes us all very “HAPPY”!

Kimberly Ann Newell, age 24, is a life-long resident of Woburn, MA and a graduate of Woburn High School.  Kim is a very busy young woman. She attends the Jewish Family and Children’s Service Day Program in Waltham and is involved in a number of volunteer services: she delivers meals on wheels, assists with Senior shopping, and cleans elderly people’s apartments, to name a few.  She also helps with her mother’s day care center and gives lots of TLC to her elderly grandmother.  For recreation, she sings in our chorus, goes to events at Echo Enrichment, and is on a bowling team.  She loves going to Disneyworld with her family and they just went there again this fall.

Kim likes music.  She said, “It’s my dream to be in chorus and to be in music school.  Singing makes me happy and excited.”  Kim has a wonderful smile and is a warm, caring, loyal friend.  She says, “I love my friends a lot.”  Kim and her mother Sharyn do many nice things for the MUSIC MAKES ME HAPPY Chorus, and we are very fortunate to have them as an important part of our special music “family”.

We appreciate your friendship and support! If you are interested in helping with the Holiday Concert, please contact Marsha ( or Kathryn ( Volunteer opportunities include ticket taking, decorating, lighting assistance, refreshment coordination, etc.
