Welcome to the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus
Fall Newsletter!

We have had a busy, wonderful Fall season! Most importantly, we’ve welcomed two wonderful new members, Lily and Julia, to our chorus family! We’ve listened to some exciting guest performers at our rehearsal, and been featured as guest performers at a special event. We received our first grant, said farewell to a beloved volunteer, and are busily preparing for our Holiday Concert.

Music Makes Me Happy Chorus Spreads Joy at
Massachusetts General Hospital

MMMH was thrilled to be invited to Massachusetts General Hospital as guest performers. Head chaplain, Reverend John Polk approached us, asking whether we would perform for the culminating event of their “Spiritual Care Week”. Eight chorus members, two volunteers, one director, one pianist, and one guest soloist made their way into Boston on a Friday afternoon to perform for an enthusiastic audience in the hospital chapel filled with hospital staff, chaplains, and patients who sang “happy songs” right along with us, and even gave us a standing ovation. In addition, our performance was broadcast to 1,000 hospital rooms.

We were beyond thrilled to have this opportunity to spread happiness and positivity to people who are faced with disheartening health challenges, as well as those who provide care. Our hearts were warmed even further by the following message from Rabbi Ben Lanckton, the MGH Chaplain who coordinated the special events of the MGH 2016 Spiritual Care Week:

"Thank YOU so much for bringing such joy, celebration, and happiness into the MGH Chapel last Friday!  We were all moved, touched, and animated by the energy, music, sincerity and presence of Music Makes Me Happy.  It was my personal pleasure to sing along with some classic favorites, and to learn some other happy tunes that I had not heard before.  It was a huge success in its own right, drawing a standing-room crowd to the chapel and putting smiles on so many faces, and a huge success as the capstone of Spiritual Care Week, experiencing that joy delivered from the heart can be some of the best medicine."

MMMH meets Turkish Music

MMMH rehearsal on Tuesday, October 28th started as usual, but ended as an exotic musical journey to a faraway land. Our wonderful volunteer Dora had invited her friends’ Turkish music ensemble to come visit us. We were introduced to new instruments and sounds, as the group performed several pieces of traditional Turkish music. They provided helpful explanations and answered our questions. We were all enthralled and thoroughly treated to such a delightful experience!

Grant Recipients

MMMH was delighted to receive a grant from the Danielle Rose Paikin Foundation. We were awarded enough funds to support the purchase of a portable keyboard with accessories, as well as a storage cabinet for our rehearsal space at the Cotting School. We are very grateful for this generous gift!

Farewell to Dora

Volunteers are so important to the work we do, and the Music Makes Me Happy Chorus is fortunate to have a handful of amazing and devoted volunteer members. Sadly, we have bid farewell to our loyal Dora, who has served and sung with us from the beginning. Dora is great at making everyone around her feel comfortable and appreciated; she always knows the right moment to offer a helping hand. She set up and served the snacks and drinks each week, and even connected us with performance opportunities at the school where she taught. We will miss her dearly, but wish her well with her new life in Dallas!

Upcoming Dates:

Mark your calendars for our Holiday Concert on Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00 pm - Come see MMMH Chorus members take on character roles as we present a short musical entitled “Holiday Song Search”! You can also join your voice with ours as we cap off the evening with familiar holiday tunes.

We are excited to be involved with Lexington’s Martin Luther King “Day of Service” for the second year in a row. On Monday, January 16th we’ll be performing at card-making events at both Lexington Montessori School and Waltham Crossing. Feel free to join in the service and music-making!

SINGER SPOTLIGHT

Thomas Edward Largy -- “Thomas” after his dad and “Edward” after his grandfather --  grew up in Wayland, where his parents still live.  Now he lives in Framingham where he shares an apartment with his friends Jason and Ron and two cats named Sophia and Ashton.

Tom attends a day program at Advocates and works several days a week at the Framingham Home Depot where he is a lot attendant.  This month is his twelve-year anniversary of working there; several years ago Tom received the Valued Employee of the Month award.

Tom also excelled as a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  As his service project he cleaned up trash in ball parks in Natick, MA.  Tom continues to pick up trash to help take care of his community.

Tom likes to go fishing with his father; his favorite games are Uno and Skeeball; and he loves making music.  Tom writes songs – often for special people or occasions, and sings them while playing his keyboard.  Tom’s favorite rock group is Air Supply, and he loves Kenny Rogers.  Tom loves the MUSIC MAKES ME HAPPY Chorus and likes all our chorus songs.  He says: “I feel like we’re all Family here!  And we all like to sing.”

Tom identifies himself as a “peace-maker”, and he is certainly a valued member of our chorus.  He functions much like an ambassador for chorus, greeting visitors and new people and always helping in any way he can.
