REGROUND technology presented to target stakeholders

At an important meeting held by Society of land recycling and environmental remediation of the state of Nordrhein-Westphalia (AAV), the principal investigator of REGROUND, Prof. Dr. Rainer Meckenstock, introduced REGROUND technology. As an invited speaker, Prof. Dr. Meckenstock explained the main idea of creating in-situ barriers with colloidal iron-oxide particles, and presented the results of the pilot-scale and large-scale applications. The presentation was well received by the audience, among them local politicians, water authorities, site owners, consultants, and other scientists.

Monitoring Completed

After two large-scale applications in Spain and Portugal, groundwater samples were taken for more than 6 months. These samples, along with those collected before the application were analyzed to determine the concentration of the contaminants in liquid phase, and to assess the effectiveness of the application of REGROUND technology in these sites. Filtered and unfiltered groundwater samples were analyzed using  ICP-MS/OES, UV-Vis spectroscopy and OC-analysis at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Currently these data are being analyzed by the consortium, and are being compared to the results of laboratory tests. The early analysis seems promising results on achieving the remediation goals in both sites.

REGROUND consortium, in collaboration with Research Institute of Applied Science (RIAS) in Iran, are testing the proposed technology in a site, where the contamination has a geogenic source. A site has been selected near the city of Takab. RIAS has prepared the site for application, including drilling new wells and sampling existing wells and springs. University of Duisburg-Essen (the coordinator, and on behalf of the consortium) provides the nanoparticles and supervises the application. The injection is planned at the end of March 2018. Further investigations in laboratory and field

REGROUND is planning to perform yet another new test application in a new contaminated aquifer. This new test was decided by the consortium after the project meeting in Barcelona, 20-21 September 2017.
The aim of this new field application is to assess the performance of REGROUND technology in aquifers where the contamination is only present in the aqueous phase, and to compare the results to those test performed in Spain and Portugal where the contaminations were present in both solid and aqueous phases. Among the candidate sites, a small contamination at south of Cologne, Germany was selected. The proposed application date is in April 2018.

BRIEFING: On 21st and 22nd of September, the 24M meeting was held in Barcelona (Spain). Latest development as the first results of the injection tests performed in the pilot sites were discussed as well as the conclusions on the market analysis were presented and discussed along the consortium, as this will be the base for the exploitation plan to be considered at the end of the project. The next steps for the following 6 months were distributed across the different partners to ensure its successful completion as per example the agreement on the selection for an additional site to perform injections in order to obtain further data.
