"If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.”
~ Martin Luther King Jr.

We often get questions from people like "What's it like to interview famous people?" or comments like "It must be really interesting traveling the world and capturing your adventures on film."

All of that certainly is exciting. It can also be pretty exhausting.

This issue, we thought we'd start sharing with you what our work looks like. Since many of you have been with us since the beginning, we want to give you a better idea of what we do.
October Activities

They say when you produce a documentary, you write the script, rewrite the script, and then you write it again. Well, we've been doing just that. To tell this important story in an hour and a half, we continuously need to adapt, improve, polish, and change the script. Our gifted writer, Shana Kelly, and our director Alana DeJoseph have been working furiously together to do this important story justice.

And, of course, to do so, we need to keep digging deeper and deeper into our research, sifting through documents and archival materials, talking to the experts and weighing what needs to be part of the story, and what can be relegated to "bonus materials."

Then, there's always fundraising. This is a public television level documentary, and our budget is $1.5 million. So, we need to continue having those important fundraising conversations, write grants, and meet with as many of you as we are able to, while still focusing on production.

Because it's an independent documentary, Peace Corps can't and shouldn't pay for it; otherwise we might run into an "appearance of bias" that public television would frown on.

So, it is your support - and the support of your loved ones and colleagues - that will bring this project to fruition. It's a towering task, but, given the current divisive political rhetoric, few tasks are more important than bringing the notion of peace and the Peace Corps back into the American discourse!

What we hope will come out of our hard work and your support:

We want to tell the full story of the Peace Corps. The history of the agency - with all of its successes and challenges - deserves the same level of commitment that volunteers and staff have been giving for over 55 years now.

To do that, we have to really dig deep. It's hard work, for sure. As volunteers know, it's that grit, that determination, those unglamorous moments that give a project the lifeblood it needs to move forward. There are highs and lows, but it's that drive that gets us there.

As we push forward in our work, know that we appreciate all that you do to support us - whether it's sharing our newsletter, sending us "pat-on-the-back" messages, or donating.

You're a big part of the story we are capturing through this documentary - the story of an agency that is unique in its mission and united in its heart.
Music from our composer, Lance Bendiksen
Our composer, Lance Bendiksen, has been working hard to capture the spirit of the Towering Task that is the Peace Corps. We wanted you to get a sneak (audio) peek at his music. And because we thought you might want to look at some imagery while listening, we assembled some of our beautiful footage from the Dominican Republic and Ukraine to go with the music.

What's Next?

For the rest of November, we'll be fundraising, scripting, seriously digging into editing, developing graphics, composing more music, planning our remaining interviews in the U.S., and going into pre-production for two international trips.

Piece of cake, right?!

Thanks again for your ongoing support!
