“Our Peace Corps, I want to emphasize, is not designed as a weapon of propaganda...It is a genuine effort by the people of the United States, particularly those who are young, to play their part in working for peace and in improving the lives of all mankind.”
~ John F. Kennedy, Universal Newsreel

As many of you know, we're working on a documentary about the Peace Corps called A Towering Task. The documentary will take an in-depth look at the successes and challenges the agency has faced in its 55 years of existence.

What you probably don't know - and it's something we're pretty excited about - is that we recently received an endorsement from the Sargent Shriver Peace Institute. We are honored and are looking forward to sharing our documentary with you in the coming months.

Recent Highlights
In March and April, we hosted a crowdfunding campaign - with the support of the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) - to raise money for the documentary. In just a few weeks, we raised over $100,000. For those of you who donated, thank you; we couldn't have done it without you. For those of you who would now like to donate to our work, you can do so easily here:

In April, we went on a production trip to the Dominican Republic. There, we interviewed Peace Corps Volunteers, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, former PC staff, and Dominican scholars and community leaders. Check out our photos below.

During the visit, we facilitated several powerful interviews, including:

  • one with an 85-year old rebel commander, who had interacted during the 1965 revolution both with Peace Corps Volunteers and US Marines, and
  • another one with a 7-year old girl from a fishing village, who explained to us what the word "peace" means to her.

We also spoke with the preeminent Dominican historian, Frank Moya Pons, who put the Peace Corps-Dominican Republic story in context for us.

We cannot wait to share these stories with all of you soon!

Here are the photos from our trip:

What's Next?
We'll be back out on the road soon. We're planning a production trip to the Ukraine, as well as research and interview trips to Washington, DC, New York, and Los Angeles. Hope to see some of you as we travel to other countries and across the U.S.!
