Connecting People, Creating Opportunity, Challenging Disadvantage

CNLC is responding to
COVID-19 with our community!

Neighbourhood Houses play a vital role in helping communities feel supported and connected. In tough times like this our role is more important than ever, and it has been wonderful to see how the sector has risen to the challenge to meet people’s needs. For health and safety precautions we have had to close our physical space, however CNLC has been working hard to pivot the way we work in order to still be accessible to our community. Our message is ‘We are open – but we are not here’.

Term 2 is upon us and although it will look very different to last term we endeavour to continue running engaging programs across both the Further Education and Community Development streams.

Strong relationships with community members and fellow agencies is a strength of the centre, and these connections have enabled us to quickly identify immediate and emerging needs for people in Carlton.

We are developing projects specifically designed to support vulnerable community members throughout this time, and also adapting our regular programs to cater for the current climate.

The team at CNLC sends you our warm wishes for a safe and healthy few months. We look forward to seeing everyone face-to-face for a celebration when we our doors re-open down the track. In the meantime you can follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with current activity and stay connected to the centre.
Take care,
Linda Perugini (Executive Officer)

Term 1 Highlights

International women's Day

Our last event at the Centre was a wonderful occasion to mark International Women’s Day. This year our theme was “If women ruled the world how would it be different?” Everyone added their ideas to a poster including free childcare, more care for the environment and stopping domestic violence. Male English students cooked the morning tea spread for us and a highlight was hearing Mohammed reciting Helen Reddy’s song “I Am Woman

What's on in Term 2 !?

Our students are Learning English at Home

We are hard at work finalising our distance learning program for Term 2.
Students have already received course materials for the first 2 weeks of term. Our teachers have responded with a lot of hard work to prepare materials. They will be working towards supervising and interacting with students through a range of media including voice and text on the phone, Google classroom, email,  Zoom, Facetime and Facebook streaming.

Our wonderful classroom volunteers will be involved supporting the students and teachers.

We look forward to being back in the classroom one day but we are also enjoying the challenge and the benefits of finding new ways of work and independent learning. We are taking enrolments so join us by ringing on 9347 2739 or emailing on info@cnlc.org.au

Community Development

The CNLC Community Development program is as vital as ever as we work with our communities to come through this pandemic more connected, supported and stronger. We have been working on 4 main projects in response to the COVID-19 virus that supports social connection while we are all in isolation at home: digital connection, food security, connecting to employment opportunities and continuing to support our community through translated information, WhatsApp groups and individual support. We are planning online activities in the near future to help entertain kids and keep adults active. There is still the opportunity to meet new people through our programs even if it is through your computer screen.

Unfortunately things like bill debts, housing issues and accessing Services Australia payments do not go away during a pandemic. The Open Door support service are continuing to work with our 100 clients over the phone and identifying issues that we can advocate on behalf of our clients.

While we can work in the garden we are planting as much food as possible to donate to Carlton residents who are in need. We are also revving up our seedlings production that will be available to local neighbours who are also trying to maintain their food security in their own gardens.
Community Food Project

CNLC is continuing to deliver fresh food and pre-cooked meals to vulnerable residents at local public housing estates with our partners Cultivating Community, Our Table, CoHealth and Moving Feast.

Contact cdc@cnlc.org.au if you want to register to receive food.
Open Door

Open Door are also planning fun online activities including yoga, art sessions for kids and parenting support groups. Stay tuned for details.
Make It Work
If you’re looking for a job in this difficult climate CNLC’s Make it Work employment program for migrants and refugees are creating new partnerships with local businesses in industries that have found themselves busy during this period such as supermarkets, couriers and building.

Please contact Saliou Kane on makeitwork@cnlc.org.au or 0480 255 133 to register your interest.
