A NOTE FROM
THE DIRECTOR....

Happy Fall, everyone! What an amazing summer we had- thanks to you, our patrons, we had the most sign-ups ever for our Summer Reading programs for all ages! Our incredible staff and teen volunteers signed up hundreds of preschoolers, school-aged kids, teens, and adults in reading programs that both encouraged more reading, but also offered fun and educational programs to support learning. Looking forward, we’re in for a busy autumn, as well! The fabulous Friends of the Downingtown Library Fall Book Sale starts this Friday, Oct. 5th- Sunday Oct. 7th - and it’s shaping up to be the best one yet! Later this month, join us for a new fundraiser- the D-town Brew Down, which will be held on Oct. 27th. Read below for info about how to be an official “taster” of 30+ delicious home-brewed beers- your ticket will allow you to vote for your favorite, listen to live music, eat from food trucks, watch live demos, and more!
On another note- I want you to know that I hear you, loud and clear- many of you have contacted me and my co-workers in recent months to ask for more- more programming and services for the community, more room, and more hours open, in particular. Thank you for your feedback, and please know I welcome all of your thoughts and suggestions. Our amazing staff and Board of Trustees work to stretch every penny as far as we can to meet the demand of our community, but we need your help to be able to do more. You might be surprised to hear that the generous individual donations we receive from our local community members and businesses almost equal what we receive in funding from our state, county, and local municipalities. We deeply appreciate this governmental funding, but unfortunately it has remained flat over the past several years, while demand for Downingtown Library services continues to grow! You can help us do more by donating to our Annual Giving Campaign online: www.bit.ly/GiveDtown, or by keeping an eye out for our Annual Giving Appeal letter that you’ll be receiving this fall.
Even if you can’t give monetarily, you can help support the Library in other ways- by sharing your “Library Story” with your friends and family- spreading the word about why public libraries are important to you helps spread awareness of the necessity of free public library service for all. Please consider sharing your story with me, too- (ehess@ccls.org) your personal stories are instrumental in helping us advocate for more funding. Let your legislators know that your support greater public library funding (learn how here: http://action.everylibrary.org/tell_politicians_to_support_libraries). You can also share our Facebook posts where we ask for donations or advertise special events. You can join the Friends of the Downingtown Library, a group which works tirelessly year-round to support the Downingtown Library. (http://downingtownlibrary.org/friends/) Every bit helps- thank you so much for supporting the Downingtown Library through your patronage, support, and donations!
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. Libraries change lives for the better.”
