We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.   

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area. 

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Request for Proposals: 23rd Annual Future Harvest Conference
Back together again for the Chesapeake Bay Region’s annual gathering of the sustainable agriculture community. This year’s conference will have the theme “Together Again” and will take place on January 14 and 15, 2022 at the Hotel at UMD in College Park, MD. We are currently planning an in-person event that both takes into account COVID-19 precautions while also making it possible for some of the workshops and keynote speakers to be viewed on-line.

Small Business Kitchen Connections Survey
The DC Food Policy Council has made a top 2021 strategy to support the development of affordable commercial kitchen spaces, particularly for Black and Latinx-led food businesses. To support this, the Entrepreneurship & Food Jobs Working Group and the Innovation & Equitable Development team at the Department of Small & Local Business Development launched a survey to gather information about food businesses looking for space and the businesses, restaurants, nonprofits, schools, and faith-based institutions that have commercial kitchens that could potentially host food makers in their under-utilized hours.While we cannot guarantee finding matches for everyone who completes this survey, we are hoping to connect folks looking for kitchen access to those who have it. Anonymized data will also be used to demonstrate the demand for kitchen space to inform the work of the Entrepreneurship & Food Jobs Working Group. Please send any questions to

The People’s School of DC 2019 “Introduction to Racism and White Privilege course” has been converted to a webinar format, that will be recorded and publicly shared, starting in July. This is a FREE 24-class course, (3) 2-hour classes a month, on the many different forms of racism and white privilege in the US, specifically focusing on forms beyond the “explicit” and “easy to see”, through a multi-media lecture series presenting hundreds of anti-racism concepts, perspectives, strategies, resources, speeches, quotes, videos, books, articles, and ways to get involved in modern day efforts to dismantle white supremacy.

Small Food Business 101: Choosing Your License & Location

Have you wanted to start a food business but aren’t sure where to begin? Do you help navigating what license is right for your business or where you should start cooking? We will cover the basics of different food licenses and discuss the costs, processes, and the pros and cons of different licenses. We will also hear from a panel of DC-based entrepreneurs who have successfully navigated different models of their food businesses, including Danielle Harris, who has run private dining meal service No Reservations cooking in customer homes, catering company District Graze out of shared commercial kitchen spaces, and now her own brick-and-mortar Little Food Studio.

July 7-9
For nearly three decades, the American Horticultural Society’s National Children & Youth Garden Symposium (NCYGS) has been cultivating tomorrow’s gardeners by energizing, inspiring, and training today’s garden educators. The 29th annual professional development conference will again take place as a virtual event instead of an in-person convening. The professional development content will be offered as a collection of live and pre-recorded webinars with nearly forty peer-led lectures and workshops viewable on demand.  Speakers will give educators both the inspiration and the tools they need to discover and nurture the passion within a child and create the space and support for a child to pursue that passion. Registration ($60 for members of the American Horticultural Society and $80 for non-members) includes access to all live and pre-recorded session content which will be available until June 30, 2022. The REED Center at Morning View Food Forest

A 72-hour immersive course spanning over two weeks, focusing on the design, care, and maintenance of natural land utilizing whole-systems thinking. Students will engage in hands-on learning developing a food forest and learning to replicate a permaculture landscape of their own on any scale. The two main focuses of this course will be your relationships you make with your classmates as well as short class days and 2 off-days that will provide an opportunity to explore this beautiful region around one of the oldest mountains on Earth.  Classes led by Ben Friton with many guest lectures and field trips. Soil Health and Storage at Cutfresh Organics
Monday, July 26, 2021 - 9:00am to 11:00am 
This workshop is the first half of a 2-Part Grain Series exploring what it will take to make local, organic grains a viable industry in the Chesapeake region. Join us at Cutfresh Organics -- a 365-acre organic farm growing food and feed-grade grain and beans -- to learn about their grain rotations, soil health practices and goals, and storage considerations. Owner/operator Aaron Cooper is a fifth-generation grain grower. Since Aaron began taking over the farm in 2006, he has steadily transitioned it 50 acres at a time from conventional to organic production and has been a constant innovator in the process - diversifying crops and rotations, exploring new market opportunities, and trialing his own equipment alterations to make the tools he owns work better for his aims. 


This lecture series will take place entirely online, with a new speaker on the second Wednesday of the month from October 2020 to September 2021.

For 30 years, ServSafe has been at the forefront of preparing restaurant and foodservice workers to deliver safe dining experiences for their guests, while also keeping themselves safe. The newly released FoodPrints Curriculum brings academics to life and connects students to their food
The UDC Bertie Backus Community Garden (BCBG) in Fort Totten is accepting applications for garden plots from Ward 5 residents.
The garden space is located at the UDC Bertie Backus Campus. The Community Garden consists of twenty-six (2) 3.5' x 7' raised garden boxes. The Community Garden's Board of Directors, in conjunction with UDC's College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) assigns plots to applicants on a first-come, first-served, and waiting list basis. The garden is currently free and does not collect any type of membership dues or fees.  Applicants to the Bertie Backus Community Garden must be Ward 5 residents. One application per household, please.  Upon completing the application, immediately send proof of identification with current address (Washington D.C., Driver's License, Voter Registration, etc.) and residency (utility bill, lease, etc.) to Your application is not complete until we have received all of these materials. No gardening experience is necessary. New, amateur, and experienced gardeners are welcome! Apply here by the priority deadline of June 30 for earliest consideration: (We recommend using a Google account to apply.)

Horace Mann Elementary School in Ward 3 is looking for volunteers for their spring and summer gardening seasons.  Mann has nine learning gardens from land to the rooftop. Volunteer with DC Mutual Aid Apothecary
The DC Mutual Aid Apothecary is a community based project that provides free herbal medicine, education and a network for local herbalists and herbal enthusiasts to come together to make herbal medicine and share herbal traditions. In 2020 we provided free herbal medicine, medicine making sessions and apothecary Pop-Ups in DC. Joyful Food Markets are run exclusively in elementary schools in Wards 7 & 8. In each school, colorful tables are filled with baskets of fresh produce and piled high with healthy non-perishable food, while festive music plays. The markets are joyful community events, where families and children can mingle with volunteers and school administrators while selecting from fresh, seasonal produce and healthy pantry staples, totaling 23 pounds of food per enrolled student. In addition, our markets feature kids’ cooking activities, recipe samples, and chef-led culinary demonstrations, designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking. These are very challenging times for many, but one silver lining of all this is the many organizations and individuals who are working tirelessly to help those in need in their communities. Food assistance organizations are already facing higher demand for food. However, as restaurants close or alter their menus, events and catering orders are canceled, and offices are moving to 100% telework, there is a large amount of excess food that could be donated and needs to be placed with a food assistance organization very quickly. Food Rescue US- DC’s network of volunteers is ready to rescue that food and get it to the organizations who need it. ECO’ City Farm's apprenticeships
ECO’s apprenticeships present an immersive, hands-on opportunity to learn about sustainable urban agriculture by working directly with experience farm staff. Apprenticeships are for those who are dedicated to coming to the farm in all weather to get real hands-on farm experience. The program is a 3 month season with a time commitment of at least 60 hours for this time period, averaging to about 6 hours per week. Farm Assistant at The Farm at Pin Oak
The Farm at Pin Oak is a family-owned and operated pastured livestock operation in Southern Md. Our sheep and pastured chickens are co-stewards of the land. Program Management Transition Consultant 
The Foundation developed the Food Learning Locator in 2017 (FLL) as an online map of more than 100 food-related education and job training programs offered throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Capital Area Food Bank is hiring a Food Growing Education Specialist 
The Food Growing Education Specialist maintains, executes, and develops educational programming for the CAFB’s Urban Demonstration Garden. The Urban Demonstration Garden is an on-site, half-acre, hands-on educational space that helps build knowledge around wellness, nutrition, and food growing for the food bank’s partners, clients, and the general public. CAUSES seeks a Graduate Assistant to join its Professional Science Master’s Program in Urban Sustainability ( The Graduate Assistant will work with a group of researchers to assess the current condition and survival of oak trees in the District of Columbia. Work will include evaluation of the presence of pests and pathogens, and measurement of abiotic factors that may negatively impact urban trees. Oak trees experiencing decline will be identified, mapped and sampled for pathogens and insect pests. Field work will be coordinated with public, private, institutional, and federal property owners across the District. The Graduate Assistant will collaborate with federal and District government agencies on the analysis, summary, and interpretation of data for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and for the general public in the form of blog posts and other publicly-available formats. The Graduate Assistantship position carries a stipend of $22,500 for 12 months. Upon successful completion of the first year, a second year of funding will be available (i.e. $45,000 over 24 months total). Non-DC area residents will also be eligible for in-District graduate tuition rates for the master’s program (currently $4,100 per semester).

Community Compost and Food Waste Reduction Grant

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the availability of up to $2 million for local governments to host Community Compost and Food Waste Reduction (CCFWR) pilot projects for fiscal year 2021. The cooperative agreements support projects that develop and test strategies for planning and implementing municipal compost plans and food waste reduction plans and they are part of USDA’s broader efforts to support urban agriculture. USDA’s Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production (Office) will accept applications on offsite link image     until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on July 16, 2021. Projects should span two years with a start date of September 25, 2021 and a completion date of September 25, 2023.

District of Columbia Community Stormwater Solutions Grant Program

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is excited to announce a recently formed partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment on the Community Stormwater Solutions Grant Program.  The goals of this Request for Applications (RFA) are to protect and enhance, directly or indirectly, the District’s water bodies or watersheds.  Another goal is to create new community partners and strengthen existing relationships with community-based organizations and small businesses.  This program will support community-oriented and inspired projects that are designed to increase knowledge and lead to behavior change as it relates to watershed and stormwater-related issues.

GreenWrench Technical Assistance Program
This fall, DOEE will be releasing a Request for Applications (RFA) for the GreenWrench Technical Assistance Program. This RFA would be to provide technical assistance services to auto body and repair shops and coordinate giving shops an opportunity to try out products that contain safer chemicals. DOEE launched the GreenWrench Technical Assistance Program to work with and educate District automotive repair shops on the effects of pollution and the benefits of source reduction.

GFFA Mini-Grant Application
The purpose of GFFA mini-grants is to enable members of communities that have been historically excluded from federal food and agriculture negotiations to generate, refine, and advocate for their policy priorities and innovations. Projects funded through the grants will be used to increase member collaboration and channel the expertise, skills, and knowledge of the GFFA coalition to strengthen its capacity to inform the policy making process.
