Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement. Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.
Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first. The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.
We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation). We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox. Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

With the suspension of the Greater Brookland Yard Sale last year due to Covid19, we decided to try growing a website to safely sell our seedlings starts. We have also improved our seedling growing and hardening areas, and have decided to use the website to allow a more prolonged sale more appropriate to the different varieties that we offer. Our 27 varieties of greens are hardened and have spent the last 10 days outside.

The United States Botanic Garden (USBG), the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), and City Blossoms just released the newly developed guidance document. The Public Housing Power Town Hall held on Saturday April 24th created a platform for public housing residents to speak on how the lack of investment in public housing repairs has led to the displacement of residents, the loss of public housing and the very real adverse effects on the quality of public housing residents' physical and mental well being. Residents urged the Mayor and local govt. officials to continue funding public housing repairs.

The People’s School of DC 2019 “Introduction to Racism and White Privilege course” has been converted to a webinar format, that will be recorded and publicly shared, starting in July. This is a FREE 24-class course, (3) 2-hour classes a month, on the many different forms of racism and white privilege in the US, specifically focusing on forms beyond the “explicit” and “easy to see”, through a multi-media lecture series presenting hundreds of anti-racism concepts, perspectives, strategies, resources, speeches, quotes, videos, books, articles, and ways to get involved in modern day efforts to dismantle white supremacy.

The Challenge is a friendly competition among cities to see whose residents can spot and identify the most plants and animals in an urban environment. Joining the City Nature Challenge is easy! Anyone with a camera and access to the free iNaturalist app can participate. By taking part you’ll help collect valuable information on urban biodiversity, and help the Washington DC metro area find as many species as possible! Starting a business in DC? Great! The Build a Dream training series is a way to start accessing resources, additional training, and technical assistance to support you. This 30-minute lunch and learn series in May 2021 is a short course version of our traditional 10-hour Build a Dream training . Over 3000 DC entrepreneurs have participated in a Build a Dream series since 2018. In this session on May 5 we will introduce the lean business model canvas as a format businesses can use to start their business planning process, and explain how to run an interactive workshop yourself if you are interested in train the trainers.

American Horticultural Society 29th National Children & Youth Garden Symposium Conference
For nearly three decades, the American Horticultural Society’s National Children & Youth Garden Symposium (NCYGS) has been cultivating tomorrow’s gardeners by energizing, inspiring, and training today’s garden educators. The 29th annual professional development conference will again take place as a virtual event instead of an in-person convening. The professional development content will be offered as a collection of live and pre-recorded webinars with nearly forty peer-led lectures and workshops viewable on demand. Speakers will give educators both the inspiration and the tools they need to discover and nurture the passion within a child and create the space and support for a child to pursue that passion. Registration ($60 for members of the American Horticultural Society and $80 for non-members) includes access to all live and pre-recorded session content which will be available until June 30, 2022. Home Apothecary Program - Mark your calendars!
Join me at Common Good City Farm for a season-long program on growing, harvesting, preparing, and using your own herbs. Meets twice monthly, March-November. Setup will be flexible to accommodate COVID safety guidelines; all foreseeable options include small group hands-on classes.
- Saturdays 10am-1pm: planting, tending, harvesting, and making herbal preparations from the plants we grow together.
- Mondays 6-9pm: lecture format-- community herbalism, herbal theory and practice, materia medica
This lecture series will take place entirely online, with a new speaker on the second Wednesday of the month from October 2020 to September 2021.

In 2020 DC Parks and Rec (DPR) started a new program called Communal Farms, which are communal production farms, managed by DPR staff and community volunteers, with the purpose of providing various ways for community members to receive free food, volunteer, and participate in hands on educational opportunities. Joyful Food Markets are run exclusively in elementary schools in Wards 7 & 8. In each school, colorful tables are filled with baskets of fresh produce and piled high with healthy non-perishable food, while festive music plays. The markets are joyful community events, where families and children can mingle with volunteers and school administrators while selecting from fresh, seasonal produce and healthy pantry staples, totaling 23 pounds of food per enrolled student. In addition, our markets feature kids’ cooking activities, recipe samples, and chef-led culinary demonstrations, designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking. The Food Growing Education Specialist maintains, executes, and develops educational programming for the CAFB’s Urban Demonstration Garden. is excited to announce the District of Columbia Urban Agriculture Small Grant Program. The goals of this Request for Applications (RFA)
are to support increased operations of food production and distribution at urban farms and to advance strategies to support the success of agriculture businesses for socially disadvantaged farmers. Food and nutrition education remains an integral component of an informed farm operation and contributes to healthy communities. This grant program seeks to provide funding to building capacity for crop production and distribution, and to increase knowledge within farmers and District residents through agricultural education experiences.
What this funds:
Projects that increase food crop production, processing and/or distribution at an urban farm, improve distribution and access to fresh foods for residents of District Ward 5, 7, & 8, construct facilities that enable agricultural education experiences for District residents, accelerate the business and production capacity for socially disadvantaged farmers, and/or advance sustainable agricultural efforts in the District. GreenWrench Technical Assistance Program
This fall, DOEE will be releasing a Request for Applications (RFA) for the GreenWrench Technical Assistance Program. This RFA would be to provide technical assistance services to auto body and repair shops and coordinate giving shops an opportunity to try out products that contain safer chemicals. GFFA Mini-Grant Application
The purpose of GFFA mini-grants is to enable members of communities that have been historically excluded from federal food and agriculture negotiations to generate, refine, and advocate for their policy priorities and innovations. Projects funded through the grants will be used to increase member collaboration and channel the expertise, skills, and knowledge of the GFFA coalition to strengthen its capacity to inform the policy making process. Applicants for mini-grants must provide answers to a series of questions developed by the Funding Advisory Board and may not receive more than 2 grants per cycle or 3 per fiscal year.
