On 8 June people were invited to come and see some of the proposals for the reordering of St Giles’ and discuss ideas with our architect Nigel Walter. Members of the congregation, the wider parish and Cambridge showed great interest, discussing the possibilities and giving feedback. Mr Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, also inspected the plans and was very encouraging. It is entirely the sort of project Cambridge needs.

The Bishop of Ely, Stephen Conway, was kind enough to arrive early and, after viewing the beer garden set up outside by Thirsty, the Wine Merchants, was most pleased to be informed about our plans for the future. He was kind enough to preside at the following service, which was sung beautifully by the Choir of Peterhouse Chapel. His sermon was very pertinent to our work:
St Giles’ “is highly regarded by Historic England for the way in which a confident neo-gothic church, with designs by Kempe and Comper was able to incorporate medieval and Georgian elements in such a way to offer poor people a vivid picture of heaven in their contemporary lives. The challenge now is to re-imagine our buildings and be confident in our worship and witness... but they are not memorials or museums... each of us individually and together are called to extend love to make it visible in our lives.”

The building looked particularly beautiful on this occasion with many hands polishing, cleaning and arranging beforehand. Thank you to all who helped. St Giles’ was at its most attractive during the day, buzzing with people, the gilt glowing in the evening light.
After the service the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire was kind enough to preside over a dinner at St Edmund’s College and present badges to those benefactors that had made a significant financial contribution to our work.

All members of the Friends can be very proud of the way that day went and of all we have achieved over the past three years. Much still remains to be done, but our plans are shaping, not just a sustainable, but a very bright future for St Giles’, allowing the beauty and use of the building to reach far into the community.
