A letter from the Executive Director

Greetings and welcome to the inaugural Reach Newsletter!

Well, it’s hard to believe, but this past September marked my one-year anniversary as Reach Executive Director. In that time I have come to appreciate just how unique the Reach community is, and how fortunate I am to have become part of such a special community.

And what a busy and eventful year it has been! Here is a partial list of accomplishments over the past year:
  • Generated a three year strategic plan
  • Awarded “Candidacy” by the WASC Commission (a critical milestone in our quest for full graduate school accreditation)
  • Hired two new full-time faculty members (Liz Baham and Donna Scarlett)
  • Initiated an innovative two-year R&D/PD initiative in West Contra Costa, funded by a grant from the Thomas Long Foundation
  • Hosted another well attended Leadership Showcase (in which our Masters graduates presented their research)
  • Significantly increased enrollment in our Teacher Intern program (from 48 to 61) and our Instructional Leadership program (from 30 to 50)
  • Added 10 new school partnerships (for a total of 65)
Phew! It really has been a busy year. And this coming year promises to be just as eventful.
Speaking of time passing, next September marks my 30th year in public education (huh?). I remember my first year as an eager, wide-eyed student teacher at Skyline High in Oakland as if it was yesterday.  And what stands out to me most after all these years was the support I received from Jim Gade, the remarkably dedicated and wise “master teacher” I was lucky enough to be paired with. Jim took his responsibility to supporting my development as a new teacher very seriously—and he pushed me hard (sometimes, very hard) to become the best teacher I could be. We all know how lonely and isolating teaching can feel. That experience taught me first-hand the critical importance of sustained, meaningful, and personalized mentor relationships in teaching. 

And it is that same kind of knowledgeable and personalized support that folks consistently point to when asked to describe the Reach experience. The experience is so powerful, in fact, that it seems a shame not to make it available to more educators. Our goal for the coming year is thus to further increase our teaching and leadership cohorts, without sacrificing the sense of community and personalization that is vital to the Reach experience. In order to do so, we need your help. Any contribution you can make to Reach will go a long way in enabling us to increase our impact. Nothing has a bigger impact on students’ prospects in school than a high quality teacher. In fact, research has indicated that a low income child who has a high quality teacher five years in a row will have learning gains, on average, high enough to completely eliminate the achievement gap with their more affluent peers. There is also an emerging consensus that an effective school leader has a strong determining factor on children's school experience. Developing effective teachers and school leadership is why we started the Reach Institute and remains the central focus of our work.
