A Chilean-led expedition to explore the ocean trench off its coast succeeded in launching and recovering a robotic lander named “DOV Audacia” (Audacity). Global Ocean Design built the OmegaLander, designed in collaboration with the Universidad de Concepcion, Chile and the Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía. DOV Audacia was deployed three times to deeper than 8,000 meters, the last a record depth of 8,081 meters. On a second cruise, it was deployed 8 times more. The Atacamex 2018 expedition represents a milestone for marine science in Chile, as researchers there pursue seminal work in deep-sea exploration and research.
The expedition made the cover of the Marine Technology Reporter, April 2018, “Lander Depth Record set for the Peru-Chile/Atacama Trench”.
