Burn ban in effect

The National Weather Service has issued an air stagnation advisory through noon on Tuesday – that means the air quality could be low. NWS recommends refraining from outdoor burning as much as possible during the advisory time.

Keep the letters coming

We’ve been getting a lot of letters to the editor from you, our readers, about everything from the proposed roundabout on Highway 99W at Clow Corner to national news. We are striving to ensure that anything printed in our paper is accurate, and have sharpened our red pencils. As you sit down to send us a letter, take a moment to cite your sources – or be ready to get a call from us.

We love to hear from you! Remember letters are limited to one per writer each month, and to 300 words or less. Check here  for our complete letters policy, and feel free to give us a call if you have any questions.

Ways to get involved

With the recent homeless forum  and Community Connect event, people are getting more involved in helping each other out. On Saturday, the Polk Community Free Clinic will be from 7 to 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dallas, 320 SE Fir Villa Road. The clinic provides free medical and mental health care to those who are uninsured or underinsured. It is on the first and fourth Saturday of each month.

Another way to help someone is by donating blood. There will be a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1505 Monmouth St., Independence.
