Dear Parents,

We have arrived at the end of the 2018/19 academic year and it's fair to say everyone has done a fabulous job!

We are sad to be saying good bye to Mrs Dennis (who started the year as Miss Edwards). She has done a fantastic job in her first year of teaching and is now a fully qualified teacher!

We are also saying goodbye to Mrs Wise and Mrs Murdoch. They have both decided to train as teachers next year! Mrs Wise has been supporting in Y1 and has developed some excellent relationships with the children in the classroom. Mrs Murdoch, as you will know, has been running our Sea School and has done an amazing job over the year developing outdoor learning. We wish them both the very best of luck with their new schools and their journey into teaching.

We need to say a huge thank you to our staff. We have had a lot of illness this year, both children and adults have had their fair share of sickness. Our teaching, teaching assistants and meal time staff have been nothing short of amazing with the cover they have provided and at times the state of health they have been in when they have come to work.

We also need to say a huge thankyou to our volunteers! There are so many of you who come into school to help with reading, art, swimming, PE and generally in classes. This is not just once or twice, but daily! You are brilliant and we all thank you for your support in school!

We will be welcoming Mr Hookes back, in September, after his double hip replacement. In his absence Mrs Peters and Mr Huggins have stepped in and done a great job ensuring the children's education has been maintained.  Thank you to them for all the hard work in Class 5 and Class 3.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents and carers who do such a fabulous job educating their children. This school is amazing and when we get the official SAT results in for this year we will show you just how good a team we all are!

Here are a few pictures of the year we've had...

From our first assembly, looking so great in our new school uniforms everyone has worked very hard! The introduction of 'Hot Chocolate Friday' was very popular with the children who consistently work hard and sometimes don't get the recognition they deserve. We have, with the careful organisation of Mrs Peters, attended more competitions this year than before. We have also seen the rise of a number of clubs which have added to the children's enrichment over the year.

We have trained Play Leaders, performed at Harvest Festival and entertained the local community through Sea School and School Council presentations.

The teachers have worked very hard over the year developing the children's writing and next year we will be concentrating on maths. Miss Lewis coordinated the Poppy garden to mark Remembrance Day. And, of course, we host music teachers who teach children over the year - giving us a great concern at the end of the term. It's been great to hear music either from whole class ensemble with Mrs Mortlock or instrument teaching by Joe and Sarah.

Our understanding of the world around us is very important. Through performance, visiting local places and going on residential visits we open the doors to the world for the children to look in. The twinning with our French neighbours is an area we want to develop!

How we access these rich experiences is always going to be a challenge. Our budgets are shrinking and we have sadly had to reduce our number of classes for the next academic year. We need parents to see the value in what we do and support the experiences that the teachers plan to give the children. The residential visits are planned in for next year and I would ask you to support these - as they are built into the curriculum the children are learning.

Year 2 - Shark Sleepover is around £70 at the start of June.
Year 3 - Go to the Pinkery for around £50 in March for 1 night.
Year 4 - Go to Bristol for 4 nights in March for around £270
Year 5 - Go to the Pinkery for 2 nights in March for around £100
Year 6 - Go to London in January for around £300 for 4 nights

There are also trips planned by the teachers to support the learning through the year. We try to give you as much notice as possible for these events. To inform you that if we can't raise funds through voluntary contributions to within 10% of the trip cost we cannot proceed with the trip. The experiences and the learning that comes from these events is wonderful and I hope we can be a school that continues to build this into our curriculum.

Mrs Peters has been working hard this year on our PE. You may know the Government give money to schools for PE development and Mrs Peters put the school forward for the School Games PE Mark. We are delighted to announce that the school was awarded silver in our first application. Thank you and well done to Mrs Peters. I hope our PE can grow and children continue to be challenged and find success in physical activity.
The Albert George Collacott Memorial Cup
The House competitions this year have been very closely contested. The Sports Day Overall was won by Raleigh with 4011 points and in second was Drake with 4007 points. Grenville scored 3485 points.

In the Attendance and Learning competition Grenville won with 16277 points. Drake were in second with 15676 and then Raleigh with 15637 points.

So, the Albert George Collacott Cup for this year was presented to Grenville who earned a 79.6 point advantage over Drake (in second) and 114.8 points over Raleigh in 3rd.

Next year we will be doing more work in Houses so the children will have the opportunity to earn points for attendance, learning (Dojo points), Sports Day and team work in House meetings / curriculum days.

Child Safety and Safeguarding our children

In the holidays, sometimes we have concerns about children playing out or being unsupervised in dangerous areas, like the beach. There are a lot of holiday makers visiting and a child may be vulnerable.

It is hard to know what to do but... the advice we have been given to pass on is...

If you are concerned about a child and it is not an emergency - ring 101. This is the Police non-emergency number and your concern will be directed to the local force. If the situation is an emergency you can call 999.

If you have concerns about a child's welfare over the summer you can contact Devon Multi Agency Support Hub (MASH) on 0345 155 1071. They will ask you about your concerns and why you think a child is at risk.

Please take action if you are concerned - you could make a big difference!
