President of the National Action Network Reverend Shane Harris releases statement with plans on denouncing San Diego City Council member Myrtle Cole concerning her recent statement at the San Diego City Council meeting affirming racial profiling in America and will call for her resignation and Reverend Harris denounces her chief of staff Jimmie Slack
The President of the National Action Network the Reverend Shane Harris has announced an immediate statement and strategy concerning the recent video a NAN member at the city council meeting caught of Council member Myrtle Cole slamming her own community the fourth district of the City of San Diego better known as Southeast San Diego at the final remarks saying these words in reference to a town hall she held on 7/19 in regards to community and police relations "I apologize to the San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman for having to sit through my fourth district townhall" she referenced and went on to say "I believe that racial profiling is happening around the country because of black on black crime". She continued in that same quote twice affirming racial profiling. This is a slap in the face to African American communities across the nation and should not be affirmed by any elected official. What she has done in her statements at the city council meeting on July 26th is affirming Racial Profiling. You cannot be an elected official of a major urban community in the city of San Diego or any community like the fourth district and make statements like this that hurt your constituent base nor would we accept any elected official over any district making these statements affirming racial profiling.
I have had the opportunities from the local to the national levels of meeting with those who have been victimized like the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner or no someone who have been victimized by racial profiling. I have personally spoken with the Attorney of Alton Sterling who recently was shot 6 times while he was pinned to the ground by police and his Attorney is completely saddened by what has happened to Alton. This fight against Mass Incarceration, Policing and racial profiling has been a long fight for minority communities across this country and that's why this is more shocking to me than anything that she would make these statements and that other council members have not said a word about it. Therefore myself and the National Action Network that first brought this to the light of the community that these statements were made as well as other organizations and churches will join together for an immediate protest Friday outside of the Fourth District Tubman Chavez Center where she is usually in her district office at. The staged protest will take place at 11:00 AM. Following that we will call for a calling campaign to her offices downtown at (619) 236-6644 , we will also proceed in announcing plans for Tuesday's San Diego City Council meeting.
I am calling on all community members, organizations and churches to join us as we denounce Councilmember Myrtle Cole and begin the call for her resignation as well as shining light to the city council that the acceptance of racial profiling is a slap in the face to the victims around the country who have faced it as well as those minorities who are still faced everyday with being profiled by police.
